Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
When I'm on the highway and at higher speeds I find that my tires are probably the source of most of the noise.
Leading evidence: 'source of most of the noise' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'source of most of the noise' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Set on ebay' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I bought a generic set on ebay for about $150 and the shop installed them in less than an hour, it's pretty simple.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
I just did the DIY intake mod... Silicon hose and resonator delete in the muffler... Car sounds better/throatier above 4,000 RPMS but my car is still just too quiet.
I am getting married in 8 weeks and am driving my Porsche 600 miles to the wedding and 600 miles back home with my new wife. The question I have is if a muffler bypass is just to unbearable on the highway? 75-80 MPH?
She has completed this drive with my before with a straight piped 3" Golf R and the drone got slightly old but she was used to my loud car. Just curious if this is a mod I can throw on my Porsche prior to making the drive?
*I have also owned a catless V8 S4 (pretty much straight piped and 2 SRT8 jeeps with full header back exhausts) I am use to loud cars..
I have the silicone hose/resonator delete and a set of muffler bypass pipes. Yes, there is some drone on the highway and on a 300 mile trip it wasn't too bad. Personally, I love the sound and when you get on it, it's heaven
A stock 996 is WAY too quiet in my opinion.

I have a Mopar Cat Back on my Challenger R/T and the Porsche is far louder, no comparison.
On a highway going 75-80 MPH your tires and the wind will drown out most of the noise coming from your engine.
I still have mufflers but my car is pretty loud with the free-flowing cats and sport exhaust. When I'm on the highway and at higher speeds I find that my tires are probably the source of most of the noise. In town I definitely here the engine more so but on the open road it becomes part of the background noise at steady speeds.
It can get a little tiring for a really long trip but if you are both used to it then shouldn't be too much of an issue.
I have driven several hours on long road trips with my entire family in tow with muffler bypass pipes. They survived without much complaint. Just requires gentle acceleration.
On the other hand, I've noticed that cold starts in the winter are really obnoxious with bypass pipes to my neighbors. I finally switched out my bypass pipes this past winter for that reason.
Lol. This isn't a long term exhaust solution. My mechanic has a set of bypass pipes and I'm too strapped for cash with my wedding to drop $1,500 on the setup I want. I am just simply annoyed with how quiet my car is currently
I'm in the same boat. I tend to not hold on to cars for very long so I'm hesitant to drop a bunch of money on something that doesn't really get me any more performance. I figure it's worth a try for $150 even if I end up hating it. Should have mine in on Thursday.
Mine really booms when I start it. So to be a good neighbor I start the car with the garage door closed. I then open it once the car is running.
So far no complaints. Well except a comment from my father when my parents were staying in the guest bedroom one morning. I was running out for bagels and started my car up. He's a Gulf War vet so the "boom" got him up and he ran out to see what was going on. He looked outside and saw me pulling away and realized it was just a flat-six, not an explosive device.
Funny. I did exactly the same thing. Started it in the garage during winter with the door closed.
Thinking about switching back for the summer because I really do miss the sound.
I just got mine on today. It is LOUD. Much louder than I expected. That said, it sounds awesome!! I'm still undecided as to whether I could live with it long term though.
