Agree with the concern about 8ohms -- I suspect the amp can drive it, but probably won't produce enough volume.

^There you go!^ I'll be interested in the results, because I bought a couple nice 5 1/4's (I think they're Infinity's) when I first got my car - I thought the stock speakers were either blown or just sounded like ****...Turned out that once I got the door panels off, the screws that hold the speakers to the sub enclosures were all loose - one had fallen out completely...

So, I wound up just tightening the screws and hit them with a little blue lock-tite.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
24 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Still not getting enough bass with the windows open.
EDIT: I just noticed the Peerless are 8ohm
vs 4ohm on the Tang and 2ohm OEM, so these may not work. Still would be interested if there is any mod-free 5 1/4 sub alternative to Tang
Original Post:
I've read a lot of threads about the Tang 5-1/4 subs sounding great but requiring a mods to the door enclosure. I was looking for an alternative 5 1/4 sub that didn't require mods and stumbled upon this Peerless that looks like it is 1" shallower (2.75" vs 3.78" depth on Tang). Does anybody know if these will work for a 996? They are crazy cheap "buyout" special at $14.50 at Parts Express, but my main motivation is for a mod-free sub. Here is a comparison of the Peerless and 2 versions of Tang:
http://www.parts-express.com/product...itesearch=true
Would be interested if anybody knows if these would fit a 996. Bolt holes on the Peerless won't match up, but that seems like it would be easy to work around.
For some reason your link to the the Peerless is not working. I've never tried them but I did put in the Tangs. The modifications required to the enclosure were pretty easy but i get not wanting to change them. If you have to mod the enclosure for the Peerless anyway I'd just go with the Tangs. I'm not sure how the OEM Amp will like driving 8 Ohms.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll do the mod to the enclosure for the Tang's if there are no other options. Agree with the concern about 8ohms -- I suspect the amp can drive it, but probably won't produce enough volume.
Apologies for the link, I think it failed because it was a "compare" of 3 products. Here are the direct links:
Peerless:
http://www.parts-express.com/peerles...river--299-125
Tang (Neodymium):
http://www.parts-express.com/tang-ba...oofer--264-831
Tang (Ferrite):
http://www.parts-express.com/tang-ba...eaker--264-917
For a second I thought the Tang Ferrite might fit -- it looks shallower than the Tang neodymium in the pictures, but the depth measures only 0.11" less (3.67" vs 3.78").
Yes, the Peerless look to be very similar to the Tang's. Look like a great deal at $15. The Neodymium does save you .3 lbs X 2. The 8 Ohms would be my concern. The Tangs are really about 3.4 Ohms so not too far from 2. Like you said, volume could be a problem. I have a convertible so volume does matter to me.
The 8 ohms shouldn't be a problem from a "safety" (to the amplifier) standpoint (the other way around would be - i.e. trying to drive a 2 ohm load from an 8 ohm output). I also don't think you'd lose too much output, volume wise either - should be negligible. At $15ea. I'd give it a shot and if the output is too low, chalk it up to experience (then sell 'em on ebay).
Ok for $30 I'll be the guinea pig.
I'll try them first with the stock amp and then I'm going to put an old 50x4 kenwood amp bridged to 2 channels. I'll let you all know how it works out.
I tried to fit the New speakers to no avail (too deep). So, I wound up just tightening the screws and hit them with a little blue lock-tite. They actually sound pretty good now - no crazy deep bass but certainly passable. Good Luck
If you're going through this much trouble to get a decent sounding bass out of 5 1/4 " "subwoofers", lol, better check to see if you have the smaller or larger door enclosures as well. Every bit will count in this regards. One is the 3L version compared to the 5L version.
Well they don't fit. Not even close. Bummer because they look like decent quality speakers.
Not a big loss... I'll make a sub for my computer at work with them.
looking at the photo's, it looks like there are 3 different types of enclosures...My '99 has the type shown in the upper photo b- not sure if they were the larger or smaller version though.
If you have the Bose system, the speakers have a very low impedance. Any aftermarket speakers that you install will have a higher impedance. Therefore, they will not play loud. I would advocate a new amp. This
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...p-upgrade.html
shows what I ended up doing.
That could be the issue right there. My factory HiFi amp does a decent job with the factory door subs with bass(albeit mid bass and above) even with the windows down. However, I am using digital processing and digital acoustic correction. Also, I don't listen to any kind of rap music and bass heavy music except dance music at times.
Did your car come with the factory HiFi or Bose option? (underhood sticker)
My guess is that if you already have an aftermarket head unit then the MOST system has already been bypassed. The advice to look at the option code sticker under the hood is good so that you know exactly what options were installed at the factory. Afaik, MOST is used between the original head unit, the amp and the CD changer. The speaker connections are just standard ones. Again, that option code will tell you what was installed and what might be lurking beneath the surface.
I'm all stock - Blows amp and head unit. I would like to keep the option of reverting back to stock if at all possible, but the whole thing isn't enough of a priority for me. I have the PSE, so I listen to that most of the time anyway.
Thanks!
I was messing with these again last night and looked a little closer at the tang band DIY's and these actually fit the same as the TB's... they don't fit into the recess of the stock speaker box... you'd have to put them on top, then drill new holes to mount, then silicone the snot out of it to seal it. Good news is there's no drilling of the back of the oem box.
I decided just to get the TB's instead of messing with these but I'm wondering if the TB's woofers will hit the door panel because of the high xmax? Anyone know if they hit or if they're ok?
