I have generic knockoffs that I installed a couple of weeks ago and my face hurts from the grin.
Leading evidence: 'Install couple of weeks ago and my face hurts' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install couple of weeks ago and my face hurts' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion
Is there any chance one might run into engine trouble running bypass pipes and losing the back pressure of the exhaust?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anybody running Fabspeed Bypass Pipes? I've listened to the set up on Fabspeeds website and they sound great but wondering if they get on your nerves after a while. I have another post inquiring about Fabspeeds Maxflow Exhaust but think those may be too tame.
I have Fabspeed headers and mufflers. I can't imagine wanting a car louder (bypass) in anything but a play car. At 4k it opens up and begins to sound like the pack of Porsche Cup cars going by when I was at the Honda Indy races in Birmingham.
It's tame enough to drive relatively quietly, but if you put your foot in it, it comes alive! I love tunnels and stretches of frontage road with walls! It sounds like a race car if you wrap it up a bit. It DOESN'T sound like a ricer fart can. It does drone a bit on the Interstate.
I have them and I daily drive them. I think they sound amazing. There is a mild drone when cruising at 65-75 mph. At 80mph+ the drone is fairly substantial.
yeah, mufflers are completely gone. Don't get me wrong, they are loud but I think people on this forum exaggerate how loud they are. They aren't nearly as loud as a lot of other stuff on the road (Harleys, trucks with 5in exhausts, etc.) The only thing I would be worried about is that if you have any loose trim pieces in your car, you will get some rattles from the increased vibrations that you didn't have before.
They are louder than a straight pipe Harley. Just pull your mufflers and you'll see. Then decide if you want to buy the bypass pipes or not. I got mine used and when the engine goes back into the car, the mufflers will go back on too.
I have generic knockoffs that I installed a couple of weeks ago and my face hurts from the grin. I have a tip and found myself actively shifting now just to hear it. I also have a long commute from the VA suburbs into downtown DC so I have to hear it a lot. I love it but it does make phone calls a little dicey and I have to turn the radio up.
You guys are actually starting to make me wonder if my car is just quieter for some reason
I really don't think it's that much louder than back when I just had the Fister D mod. My friends don't seem to think it's too loud. I've taken girls out on dates in it and none of them have mentioned it. Hell, even my mom hasn't complained.
I have the fabspeed maxflows and they are a bit tamed. I was a little disappointed after the install. Wish they had a little more growl and they would be perfect. They're aren't bad as is but I guess i was expecting a little more. I thought about the bypass pipes but I really need to hear them in person. All the videos and comments haven't pushed me to do it yet. Everyone's opinion on "loud" will vary depending on your taste. I'd suggest trying to find someone local with the set up if you can. Then you can get a better idea if it is something you want to do.
^ What he said. Just unbolt the muffler clamps from the catalytic converters - you could probably even do this leaving all the parts in the car - just wiggle things around so the muffler intake does not line up with the exhaust leaving the cats.
After suffering through driving a car with open headers a mile to the exhaust shop, I can't imagine why people intentionally inflict this upon themselves.
I had a Fabspeed cat bypass on the GT3 - for a week. It seemed like a great idea on Day 1 and I was seriously considering doing the same setup on the 996. Suffice it to say that didn't happen.
Which knockoffs did you go with? Are you happy with them aside from the sound? I'm all for spending extra for quality parts, but there's not much to the piece. I think the Fabspeed is way too pricey for what it is, and the fitment doesn't look too good from their pictures.
It's a 90 degree elbow with a tip. No hangers or anything else that can cause fitment issues. If it doesn't fit right, loosen the clamp and adjust it until it does. There is no manic to these parts. Any muffler shop can make them for not a lot of money.
I had them on my 996C2 and have them on my GT3. I've run them for a couple years. They aren't that loud (for me) under normal load. You can drive on the highway and have a conversation without yelling. No drone in the GT3. There was some in the 996C2. I like them. It's about as loud as the spec boxster with the race exhaust on it.
And on the track - AWESOME.

There's a big difference in opinion on what is too loud. There is a guy with a straight pipe 996 cab (no cats or mufflers) who works by me, I hear him multiple times a week. It is significantly quieter than my Viper with a Mopar exhaust (factory upgrade). I think most of the members here like a subtle change, not a dramatic change.
I think the 996 sounds much better with the exhaust opened up.
Is there any chance one might run into engine trouble running bypass pipes and losing the back pressure of the exhaust? I'm considering the bypass pipes but can't afford to screw up my engine. Thanks.
I bought some bypass mufflers recently in the UK by Porscheshop and they're fine. They are very loud and do drone slightly at some revs but they make up for that for the sheer fun of accelerating.
My wife hates them and when I go down a gear in readiness to overtake she closes her eyes and sinks lower in her seat. They're worth it just for her reaction
I doubt there would be any engine issues but whatever Fabspeed say, you ain't gonna get an increase of 24bhp. You may get a few but not an 8% increase. Surely....
Yup, you will loose noticable low end torque with the bypass pipes. Almost forgot about it until this post and it will be very noticeable. Maybe there is a top end gain (I highly doubt it) but the power where you use it the most when on the street will be less.
I bought mine used from an RL member (hi Mark) and I have no idea who made them. The tips are "OK" - if I had some change burning a hole in my pocket I'd probably go back to the exhaust shop and have them weld on something else, but I just can't care that much. We're talking about what, 24" maybe of SS with one bend per side and a tip?
I have absolutely no idea how Fabspeed can justify their price. I had mine put on in a local shop because I was sick of dealing with rusted exhaust hardware, and when I told the shop owner how much the Fabspeed pipes cost he almost choked. This is a guy who can make SS headers for any American muscle car with a blindfold and one arm tied behind his back.
I didn't feel like my torque loss was noticeable. In fact I didn't really notice anything except a little bit more oomph in higher RPMs. In any event the motor seems happier up higher in the revs so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
