I only ever cleaned a flywheel if I had it resurfaced to make sure it had no grinding swarf on it.

Suggestion

So, you can remove the old one before you do any cleaning of the flywheel and then before you install the flywheel install the new pilot bearing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can you hose down a dual mass flywheel to clean the clutch dust that accumulates in it? Or maybe use brake cleaner? Before everyone starts saying "buy a new one" I have already inspect it and there is no scoring and the play is aprox 14mm on both ways.. I think is in good condition.

POST 2Original post

Solvent cleaner is good as water will promote rust. Best to use the cleaner that's safe for rubber. You can also take it to a body shop to resurface it if needed.

POST 3Original post

My favorite btw. I usually keep a dozen of cans in my garage. http://www.fswerks.com/products/8909140

POST 4Original post

While you can definitely reuse it - and a capable shop can resurface it - brace yourself for the numerous "you're not supposed to do that" comments... I would use a blowgun attachment and clean it up with compressed air.

POST 5Original post

I would use compressed air and then clean the surface with rags and alcohol (not the drinking kind). I would not use brake cleaner or water. You just need a squeaky clean surface for the clutch plate.

POST 6Original post

Don't use compressed air, you'll get the friction material airborn. Brake cleaner or just regular rubbing alcohol will work well. Don't use tap water, as said above, promotes rust.

Brake cleaner is fine. It is a non-residue cleaner. Arrange to securely suspend the flywheel so you can spray the cleaner and let it drain off and then let the unit air dry. Do not use compressed air to clean or dry the flywheel. Avoid breathing the dust. While it has no asbestos, it can have other things -- copper maybe -- but whatever the dust is it is not healthy to breathe in.

POST 9Original post

Does this qualify for a "Where do you put your flywheel dust" thread? "Or which is worse, brake dust or flywheel dust" thread?

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 13054330

Well, it is kind of silly. I only ever cleaned a flywheel if I had it resurfaced to make sure it had no grinding swarf on it. If when the flywheel is removed from the engine and the flywheel is oily due to some seal leaking then it must be cleaned, but I have not encountered an oily flywheel. Otherwise, after removing it or after cleaning it after resurfacing I would just sit the thing to one side out of the way until I was ready to install it again and then when installing it be sure my hands were not oily/greasy.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do I have to cover or remove the pilot bearing before I do this?

POST 12Original post

If you remove the pilot bearing, it will get damaged during removal and shouldn't be reused. So you can either cover it and leave it in the flywheel or remove it and replace it with a new one.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thank you all for your suggestions!

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 13054435

Whenever I had the flywheel off I'd always remove the pilot bearing/bushing, then install a new bearing/bushing just before installing the flywheel. So, you can remove the old one before you do any cleaning of the flywheel and then before you install the flywheel install the new pilot bearing. If you are not able to then install the transmission you can tape some clear plastic wrap over the pilot bushing area to prevent any dust/dirt getting blown into the bearing/bushing.
