Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
I'm always reluctant to suggest someone continue to run an engine when it is making noise so I won't suggest you run the engine anymore for my or another's benefit other than a qualified Porsche tech.
Leading evidence: 'Run engine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run engine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello All,
I'm new to this forum and would greatly appreciate any additional information on a problem that arose out of nowhere today. I have an '01 3.4L 996 with 79k miles and a very sudden knock/loud clank started happening. The car was warm by this point and has never knocked in the past.
I attached a brief video for an idea of the sound. It is rhythmic at times, but briefly stops occasionally. It also speeds up with RPM, but is quite loud overall. Could it be a hydraulic lifter tap, bent valve, or??
I'm not quite sure how to go about this and any advice from all you guys would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
That is a strange sound. Cannot tell if it is mechanical or something like a blown exhaust gasket, loose spark plug. You are going to have to get some professional experienced help. I personally would not run the engine for any longer than it takes to isolate that sound either external to the engine, or internal to the engine. Step 1 - figure out where the noise is coming from. Sounds like it is coming from the Bank 1 side of the engine. But one cannot tell if it is internal or external to the engine. Step 2 - pull the oil filter, cut it open and visually inspect. Step 3 - as suggested, boroscope the cylinders. Step 4 - pull the valve covers and see what is going on. Step 5 - cut up your credit card because what comes after is going to be very expensive. Good luck.
I would love for this to turn out to be a pinhole exhaust leak, but I'm a hopeless romantic. Like everyone else has suggested, don't keep running it until you diagnose it properly.
No check engine light?
Sounds like an exhaust leak (a pretty bad exhaust leak) to me, or a loose plug. Another possible explanation is there is something -- one owner found a bolt -- caught between the crankshaft pulley and the engine and it was making a heck of a racket.

IOWs, I think you need to consider flat bedding the car to a qualified shop and letting an experienced Porsche tech give a listen and then offer what he thinks is going on.
He can do this with the car on a lift and him under the car and he should very quickly be able to locate the source of the noise. If he determines it is coming from outside the engine then that's good news, I think.
