Suggestion

I'd do some testing (maybe a shop vac or a compressor) to ensure you're still getting decent airflow, but if there's a repellent that will prevent the water from impregnating the sock fabric without reducing its ability to breathe, that might cure or at least improve your car wash problem...

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Now I know some folks are not a fan of the K&N FIPK 57-7000 air intake for the 996 and I understand why. Car washes and that mesh cover for the air filter are not friends. But I will not let a little water dripping through the fan ruin my intake mod. I think the best solution is to install a heat shield over the filter to act as a splash guard. I ordered the Injen HS3500 and it was almost perfect. Sadly it is about 1inch short of being long enough to cover the entire RP-4630 air filter which is 7in. tall. I am sure someone out there has found a way to keep the water off this air filter (other than the mesh filter cover that says it keeps out water and causes my car to stall after a car wash). Has anyone found a good heat shield that fits this filter or possibly another solution to the problem other than putting my stock air box back in. Thanks in advance for the help.

POST 2Original post

I haven't had any issues with mine - it does have the cover . . . I have never had it in a car wash either . . .

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, if I hand wash I never have any issues. Sadly a car wash dumps an excessive amount of water onto the filter and small droplets make it through the fine mesh water resistant filter wrap which causes the car to stall out if I accelerate too hard after the wash. I have even purchased a different filter wrap with the same experience. So currently I just hand wash the car vs driving through touchless car washes until I figure this out.

POST 5Original post

K&N comes with a water proof cover, if you dont have one you should call them and ask about it

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Unfortunately, both the waterproof cover that came with the filter and the one that I purchased separately do not prevent the car wash issue. So has anyone created a splash guard or found a heat shield big enough for this filter (to act as a splash guard)?

POST 7Original post

take some tin foil and cup it over the top of the filter when you wash it

POST 8Original post

Have you tried one of those K&N filter wraps? I've sold a few of those 57-7000 kits to Rennlister's, but I think they don't speak so they won't get bashed. I'm a K&N dealer if you have any questions or want to purchase anything. -Jason

POST 9Original post

The K&N unit comes with a wrap/sock/whatever you want to call it - but OP says it gets coated with water at the carwash and thus impedes airflow. OP, have you thought about treating the fabric with water repellent? I'd do some testing (maybe a shop vac or a compressor) to ensure you're still getting decent airflow, but if there's a repellent that will prevent the water from impregnating the sock fabric without reducing its ability to breathe, that might cure or at least improve your car wash problem... I had one of the K&N intake kits, but (like the other aftermarket intakes I've tried), I eventually dumped it. For the year I had it installed, I didn't experience any issues with water causing the filter sock to choke the intake.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As mentioned the K&N sock and the after market one made by Outerwears still caused the vehicle to choke when seriously accelerating coming out of a car wash. I like your suggestion on water repellant spray. I have two socks so I will run some tests and see what I come up with. Doesn't sound like anyone out there found a heat shield bigger than the Injen one I listed in the earlier post.

POST 11Original post

Why are y'all going through all this drama? Does it look cooler? Has some one done a before/aft dyno which according to these posts, is obviously a flawed setup?

POST 12Original post

I have the fabspeed dual intake on mine and live in the UK where it rains 60% of the time and I've had no issues at all with mine and I've had it on for about 18 months now

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The fab speed looks good. I'll have to check it out.
