Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am a proud new owner of a 1999 Porsche 911. There are a few projects that I am tackling myself. First is a bad wheel bearing noise coming from the back right. I ordered a new bearing and the special tool from Pelican. It should be here Friday!!! I have never used this tool from Pelican but hope it works well. It sure was pricey. Have any of you replaced a rear wheel bearing on a 996? With this speciallty tool is it necessary to pull the wheel carrier? I am looking forward to learning about this car and working on it and making it my own. Thank you for any help you can lend.

POST 2Original post

The tool does make it easier. Just be certain that things are square when pressing the bearing in and out. Take your time and let the tool do the work. You may want to try warming the hub on reassembly, that is what the manual recommends. Damaging the hub gets expensive quickly.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay thank you. I need to get a maintenance manual. I tried downloading one tonight online with no luck.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What is the trick to get the rear axle out with out removing the wheel carrier. I have it disconnected at the transmission and loose at the wheel carrier but can't get enough room to slide it out? Is this possible or do I need to start removing other parts?

POST 6Original post

Put a jack on the brake hub and jack it up a bit to point the half shaft downward at the trans.

POST 7Original post

Also put the new bearing in the freezer before install.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay thanks all. I was able to get the drive shaft out and now just waiting for the new bearing and tool to arrive tomorrow.
