I had a reputable shop try to vulcanize the repair....thought it would hold only to come out and see it flat........all said it was trashed....I smiled, Cuz it could have very easily been a PS or Cup tire.........one last note, I was fortunate to have some coaching last year at WGI, the instructor asked me a bunch of questions, including the sneakers my baby was wearing.....he was shocked (pleasantly!) I suspect more and more owners will be making the switch.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was down to banana skin on my Sumi HTR Z III 285. Ordered a set of 295 from tire rack and received in less than 24 hours. The 295 are now protecting the rims better than the 285. What a tire! These are great! Ride quality is just as good as my Michelin Pilot Rib.
Sumitomo HTR Z III (High Technology Radials-3rd generation) Max Performance Summer tire:
295/30ZR18
2002 Porsche 996.
Seems you just can't beat that tire for the price/size/performance.
I have toyed with the idea of replacing the Conti 2s on the back once they are gone as the fronts look great.
Just can't justify buying 2 contis for the same price of Sumis all the way around.
Looks good.
I've got over 10K miles on the set that's on my A4 and while I only drive that car as transportation these days it has quite agressive camber due to it's low stance and I've been pleasantly suprised at how well the tires are wearing while still giving good performance.
I'll buy another set after these are done. As a matter of fact I was going to put them on my E55 but they don't make the size I need for the rear of that car.

I am running 235F and 295R with the Sumi IIIs. It was the same width comparing with Ferd's 285 P-Zero's though. I thought it would be 10mm wider.
Each tire make measures their width a little bit different..
Guys, drove my new ones at Road Atlanta this weekend. Wasn't expecting much, but they held up great. I ran the car with stock suspension and brakes. I did get some wear on the outsides of the rears, but still plenty left.
Next time, I will do R-comps, but that is only to keep up with the race cars in the expert group.
Sumis are a true bargain...stop with the praise before the manufacturer finds out and increases the price. I will buy them again when mine wear out(even though some will say, "they aren't N rated").
My contact at Tire Rack has told me "unofficially" that the Sumi HTRZIII is the best tire bargain they have. Nearly equal to the performance of the top tires at a fraction of the price.
I ran them on my 968 and will replact my Contis with them when the time comes.
I just put a set of Sumis on the 996 two weeks ago for the new owner. Best kept secret in world of tires. I was running just the rears before and wife has them on her Boxster.
Pftt! Bah! Sumi's are the worst tires around. I've been driving on a set for a few months ago and can hardly believe it.....
(geez you guys - let's keep ixnay on the reatga iresta or EVERYONE will get them and the price will go up!)
Wore out my sumitomo II's and switched up to the III's...
Funny though, I like the II's better for track days, seem to have less tread squirm than the III's...
anyone else think the same?
"Absolutely love my Sumi's, and at less than 1/2 the price, I'll take 85% of the performance"
Amen! and no one on more expensive tires was passing me!
Sumitomo's do have a marking on side wall "N 013", not sure what it is. The N rated is for USA sold tires only.
I never liked the profile of the PS2s they look like balloon tires, but I liked the Pilot Rib which I could not find 295/30/18.
Chris- Pretty sure that the 'N' on the tire is just some numbering system from Sumi. The 'N' actually comes from Porsche. What I would like to know is what does the 'N' stand for........is it short for a word? How did Porsche come up with using the letter 'N'?
where do you drive the car? any track days?
if NO track days or 1/yr.... the Sumi's are your ticket - swear, they are great !
if more track days, I would look hard at other choices, mine started to be a weak link with more days....
Drive in NYC. Never tracked but might do it this yr... Dont really drive much in the winter but do take it out in the rain (yes.. I said it.) Read that the hankooks are better in the wet so I was leaning that way.
I was just on the Tirerack site.
If you compare the Conti 2s and the Sumis HTR Z IIIs in 295/30ZR18 you will see that the Contis are 6 pounds heavier! 36lbs compared to 30lbs for the Sumis.
Not sure if I love that or it makes me nervous. Nice unsprung weight change but do the N spec tires have some type of reinforcement requirement that would substantiate the weight increase. Continental is usually on the light side when It comes to weight.
According to Adrian Streather in his 996 book the N rating is applied to tires that are specifically designed for rear engined Porsches. Supposedly they have a different construction composition to compensate for the rear weight bias of the car.
I have no idea if this is true or not.
Several tire gurus have told me that N rating is overrated - more marketing than actual performance.
Actually, they don't: 1477 lbs. (94) for the Sumis, 1653 lbs. (98) for the PS2s. The HTR-Z III is not an "XL" tire in that size.
There are a few other anomalies: the HTR-Z III weighs 30lbs in 295-30-18, but only 27lbs in 285-30-18. But, the smaller size is an XL tire and has a higher load rating (1609 lbs/97).
I vote for the Sumi's. I just put Continental Extreme Contact DWs on my car and while good, I will revert to Sumis for the next set. Had them on my 951 and they were superb.
I debated on SUMI's 285 1600 lb @ 27 lb vs. the 295 1500 lb @30 lb. I wanted the extra tire to protect the rim and 100 lb load difference wasnt a bad trade off. The tire grip feels much stronger than the 285 but that may be just the new tread. SL vs. Xl load rating were another issue since Porsche wants 44 psi in rear tires. The following stated that SL load could have a 44 psi rating for high performance tires. So far I am very pleased with the performance and ride.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/tirespecskey.jsp
For example, while a P-metric sized standard load tire's maximum load is rated at 35 psi, many P-metric sized standard load performance and touring tires are designed to contain up to 44 psi (and are branded on their sidewalls accordingly). This additional range of inflation pressure (in this case, between 36 and 44 psi) has been provided to accommodate any unique handling, high speed and/or rolling resistance requirements determined by the tire and vehicle manufacturers. These unique tire pressures will be identified on the vehicle placard in the vehicle's owner's manual."
This is a great article on N rated tires. Total 911 stated that Porsche worked with specific manufacture to come up with a tire for its current model. Total 911 stated that none N rated tires can be just as good but not designed with Porsche.
After checking all the tire specs at Tire Rack site go to Sumitomo website and check there; you will be really confused.
It seems to me that the only sure way is to weigh and measure the tire yourself...
Anyways, I just got 295 Sumis and 225 fronts installed and they're great tires, thats for sure
Not sure about my qualifications, but I just bought the Hankooks a few weeks ago. They are great in wet, very quiet compared to the Continentals, and handle well (no track use yet). Before the Conti's I had the Sumis H.. II and liked those as well, except that they felt greasy at times.
The decision for me between the Sumis and Hankooks was easy. The latter were in stock and on sale at my local tire shop...
So far, very satisfied.

Gentleman:
I absolutely concur. Many inquiries were made and it seemd that they all said Michelins were the ONLY way to go. I just couldn't do it. I bought the Sumi's front and rear, plus two extra rears......well, after 100 miles on a PCA social drive I got a spike right in the side wall. The are amazig for the price. I was told by a track guru that therese tires are made in the Bridgstone plant....but no proof or other eveidence
The Sumis I just bought were the IIs. That's what I had before and they worked superb. I liked the tread pattern better, they were extremely quiet, terrific in the wet, better than the Pirelli Asymetricos (N rated) on slightly above freezing wet roads, 360 wear index vs. 300 for the IIIs. They did feel greasy for the first hundred miles or so until the mold release agent (?) wore off and they were scuffed a bit. I recall my first set felt the same way and my first impressions were based on the greasyness. I know better now. I think it would be in the running at any price.
Why mess with success and less than $500/set delivered.
I have the HTR-ZIIs on my Supercharged Corrado VR6, and they have been great. They squeal a bit in the turns, but overall I have no complaints for what cost me $42/tire.
When I got the GT3 fitment wheels for my 911 (18x8.5, 18x11), I went 235/40/18 and 295/30/18 HTR-ZIIIs. The difference between the IIs and the IIIs is night and day. These tires are 90% as good as the PS2s and 1/3rd the cost, but they aren't quite as quiet. As stated though, they are a bit narrow compared to other tires, and on the 11" wide rear wheels, the tires somewhat stretch. I'd love to run a 315/25/18 on the rear, but alas they don't make them in that size. Also, the 235s in the front are XL rated, whereas the 295s are not, which is a bit odd.
I would be curious to compare these to the Ventus V12s from Hankook, as they are a bit wider than the HTR-ZIIIs and they are about the same price.

For the street, I only use Sumis. I used the Sumis on my old 996, and got a set recently for the GT3. I don't think there is a better tire for the money. Especially if you are going to chew them up with a track alignment

Seems like we're all coming out of the closet, lol.
2-3 years ago I would have been afraid to admit I was a user, (Sumis) for fear of being banned from the forums, or at least flamed to shame.
Hey Desidon:
if you get this, what wheels are they.....I am beginning to look at changing mine...I prefer the black centers with the polished/chrome lip
I take all 3 cars to a local small family owned shop for tire needs. While they mostly do Bridge- and Firestone they were kind enough to order me the Sumi's.
Price was equal to tirerack after exchange/shipping & duty to Canada.
So far very happy.
A set of all season Bridgestones for the Jetta actually cost me more than the Sumi's (295 rears) on the C4S, go figure!
I'll be curious to see how they hold up and how noise increases with tire wear. The Pirellis that were on it before were horrible.
and wallets
trouble is we are used to paying so much for everything we get nervous when something is fairly priced and good quality/value for the money
Not me. I've done so many stupid things, that using Sumis isn't even on the list. I have been singing
praises for Sumis since 2007
.
I know there was a thread somewhere where I admitted to upgrading the sound system and also running Fabspeed bypass pipes. No THAT's genius

"If you have non-N-rated tires, then, you can relax. If the handling characteristics in all conditions suit your style of driving and what you expect o f the car, then who can argue against that?
Porsche’s aim right from the start was to make sure that tires were available that met not just its own high engineering standards, but also met the capability of the car’s performance.

I'm happy with the Hankooks.
I tore through one set of Sumi's already.
In my 2 months with the V12's I'd say they're better all around, better ride quallity and better grip (very grippy rubber).
The V12's also have good tread depth to start, but initially that means they're not super crisp on turn in, but I'm sure that'll improve as they wear down a bit.
There's that tire comparo on Car & Driver, that steered me to the Hankooks.
Just put two in the rear. I had no choice. These were in stock at the Tire Kingdom when I limped in with a shared piece of metal in my left rear. A review to follow:
(Revived a really old thread ;-)
I changed out some old Michelin's for these this past week and the ride is much nicer (metal was showing in the Michelins- so not a fair comparison) Only weird thing is they seem to smell like burning rubber? Need to get the alignment checked... But, ya, the ride is good and the price was right
Can someone shed some light on the fit for 18" x 11", I have 285 Continental DW and do not want any narrower than what I have, I also want to get 295.
These sound like great tires for DD and Autocross.
I also need wider tires on front, the new rims 18" X 9".
Any thoughts on going to a 35 series in the front.
You can get 295 fitment for the Sumi's via Tire Rack thru eBay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sumitomo-HTR...5WjAVA&vxp=mtr
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sumitomo-HTR...=mtr#vi-ilComp
I have the 295's on the rear on 10.5" wheels and 235's on 8.5" wheels and it feels remarkably planted
Definitely double check what you are buying
Based on the experiences for Sumi tires on this forum, I went searching for them at my local Discounted Tires. They don't carry that brand but told me they did carry Falcon and that this company makes Sumi tires. They looked up the Falcon tires for my car and the price was a little higher than on Tire Rack for Sumi's but I thought that for convenience I might try them. However, I left thinking the shop was giving me some BS and decided to do a little research, and saw this............
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falken_Tire
Anyone know about these tires, anyone tried them? My son had some on a Cayman about 2 years ago and said they seemed fine to him, then he sold the car so not really anything to go on.
and Firestone makes Bridgestone.
Does that mean they are the same tires.........
Just get them from tirerack, have them delivered to one of their installers and off you go.
once delivered, make an appointment for mounting and balancing. Super easy and convenient
hint: search through the tire rack installers list and you may find a great deal. Here in San Diego, I found a firestone store that does mounting and road force balance for $14.50 a tire! That's 1/2 of what others charge
The only model Falken tire I'm familiar with is the 452 . I've been running them on my Esprit and find them to be a great tire. So much so that if they came in the right sizes for the 996 which they don't (no 285x30x18) I would have purchased them.
How is road noise on Sumi?
I have 18x9 & 18x11,
I have Continental DW, now, but want to change if these tires wear out, front have 15k on them and still have great thread.
I want to go 295 X 30 in rear I want a front tire that will fit correctly on 9" front rim, any thoughts on a 35 or 30 series?
No, I didn't. I went to Discounted Tire because my son uses them for all his cars and says he gets great service/price. However, looks like that wont work for me. They want $125 to install the Sumi's on my car, might as well use Tirerack and their installers.
