Suggestion
You could try the manual release for the frunk then disconnect the battery and reconnect it (I'd leave it off for a minute or so just to make sure stuff resets).

You can then disconnect the battery at the + jumper terminal.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

i have been searching for a way to get in a 996 convertible
the car is standing here for steering pump replacement
and now the remote is in sleep mode
and here is the problem there is no key cylinder in the driver door
to open the door
2001 996 4s convertible

No such animal. The 4S didn't come out until MY02.
If it really is a MkI, I've never seen one without a physical key slot before. Did someone put a UK passenger door handle on it or something?
I'm not as familiar with the MkII, does it have a different door handle? If so maybe the key slot is under the handle (e.g. lift it up)?
There is always the obvious (and expensive) answer of cutting through the top.
You could try the manual release for the frunk then disconnect the battery and reconnect it (I'd leave it off for a minute or so just to make sure stuff resets). When you reconnect I would expect it to pull the alarm/remote back into the awake mode.
Ahh... EU. That explains the model info. You guys use build year where we use the model year (your system makes more sense
).
So yes it can very well be a 4S then.
Cause Chevy didn't make a 327 in '55, the 327 didn't come out till '62. And it wasn't offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb till '64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top-dead-center.
It was a joke. We are as much at a loss about your missing lock cylinder as you are.
I think the frunk approach is your best bet. Otherwise you'll probably have to break something (window or roof)
I'm pretty sure the op doesn't really care when the car was built, he just wants to get into it.
Not to be snide but this is a left side drive car right?
I was trying to help you avoid looking like an ***
I agree this is weird, but that pic is clear enough that it's not just a flipped pic. It doesn't show enough to answer the LHD vs RHD, but I'm giving the OP the benefit of the doubt that he A) knows which side of his car is the driver side and B) isn't just trolling us.
I could actually see someone that hasn't had a 996 very long thinking it would be a cool idea to put the RHD passenger handle on a LHD car. Visually the lock bugs me a bit, but anyone that has had the car more than a few months should have run into either a dead battery and/or sleep mode and know not having the physical access is a bad idea.
the car is open
to find the release cable for the trunk i had to remove the right headlight
with the trunk closed and wheel on the car because of the wheellock
i first set of the alarm with the engine lid hoping it activated the remote again
no luck had to undo the battery for a few seconds and the fob opend the car
thanks for all the advice
grtz kristof
Cool. Glad you got in without having to break something.
I'd recommend relocating your emergency frunk release so it can be reach through the grill area. That's where it is supposed to be.
I'd also recommend replacing that door handle too
.... that was inventive
You bought the car in Germany, you said... directly from the previous owner, or from a dealer ? I'd assume the previous owner would have a backup installed to get into the car, but a dealer would not necessarily know this.
I guess you'll be installing a doorhandle with a locking mechanism ?
not my car from freinds off my gf bought from used car dealer in germany not responding to phone anymore my guess it has been wrecked and fixed with used parts
for the non believers
the golden tool
easier next time
the bracket remounted after bumper removal
the place i had to remove 3 nuts from bracket
This is crazy! Yes the alarm system goes to sleep mode after a few days if the car is not used, the door lock on the driver's door is how the door would be unlocked with the key.
I think you may very well be right the car was fixed, for whatever reason, with a non-standard door handle for a left hand drive car.
i think the car is a 996 c4 convertible but on the papers from germany
it says 3596cc 235kw 02 march 2001 4s but on renntech there is a vin decoder
online vin decoder renntech
There is also an engine cover release coiled between the left tail light and bumper cover that can be fished out with a thin wire hook. One can wedge a plastic/rubber spatula in between the light and bumper to open the gap a little to make this easier. You can then disconnect the battery at the + jumper terminal.
Not sure if this would have worked as well as the frunk/battery. Also sometimes one can get lucky and pop out the right side marker to fish out the frunk release wire through that opening.
Glad to see you found a way in! lol Talk about an odd set of circumstances. Sounds like the prior owner found some really cheap work arounds to fixing the car. I hope you and your gf have better luck with the car moving forward.
As for the model of car, as others have noted, there wasn't a 4S cabriolet in 2001. I think you're right that it may be a C4. A full picture of the rear end or the front end would help but the bumper in this picture...
...is not that of a standard 4S. It might have an aero kit...can't really tell but it doesn't appear to have the Turbo's front end (like the 4S). Anyway, good luck with the new cab!

it is a freinds car my gf drive's a 997 c2 convertible and i have a honda s2000
and this car does not have turbo front bumper nor has vents in the rear one
when they drop the car of i already told them i did not believe it was a 4s
but the german title says it is and even says 3.6 with 235kw
i dont know how correkt the vin decoder is
so i'am going to tell them top go to a stealership an ask for the right info of the car
grtz kristof
you are absolutly right so only time wil tell how easy it wil be to put a doorhandle with cylinder in the car probably no wiring for the lock
grtz kristof
Not that I disagree with you, but after the whole missing lock cylinder mess do you really want to make any assumptions based on the bodywork of this car?
Even if there is no wiring for it in the door they should just need the appropriate wiring harness inside the door as it will be correctly wired up to the door itself.
lol good point
Sounds like a fake title or something else very strange is going on. I would tell your friend to run fast and far from that car. Something is WAY wrong. 001s came with a 3.4l engine...and, as others have said, there was no C4S cab in 2001...and, then the body work is all wrong, too which suggests it's a narrow body car (to me, at least) and not a wide body.
I can hear gnat reminding me of his post again...and he's right...which is why I would sell this car as quickly as possible and look for a different one with a better sorted history. I hope your friend got this one cheap!
