I only changed my tach but didn't push it down quite far enough so there is some slight light bleed around the spindle when the headlights are on.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello people, Long story short, fancied a chance of dial colour and so purchased a dial from Porsche Dials (dont use him, see rennlist 993 section for more details). Anyway, managed to strip the unit down fairly easily and pry off the needle (no doubt ive broken the gears within) But can not get this grommet out and the only guid eive found is for a 997 where the guy cut the grommet out as its rubber and this is plastic. So before i conceded defeat and ask Reap to do it for me, has anyone got an idea on how to do it/has done it before? A few friends have all suggested hair dryer and pliers but any other suggestions? Thanks

POST 2Original post

As I recall that grommet will separate from the original dial face and then you can pull it out separately. It was a bitch to do though.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So basically persevere then?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok another quick question, how can you tell if youve broken the spindle mechanism? How much should the needle go down by till it hits a stop? Or should the stop be at the resting point when the engine is off? Thanks

POST 5Original post

I'd use some images as a guide can find heaps of detailed cluster images on ebay. How did you get the needles off did you just pull or did you use a tool? I have read cases where people have changed their dials and the gauges stop working. If you were careful im sure you'd be fine.

POST 6Original post

http://r.ebay.com/GNryrw That has some good close ups of where the gauges rest. I have no affiliation.

POST 7Original post

It goes pretty far down. I only changed my tach but didn't push it down quite far enough so there is some slight light bleed around the spindle when the headlights are on. I would change one and use one you hadn't changed as a guide on how far down to go with it.

POST 8Original post

Quick question for you im doing this at the moment but im stuck at taking the cluster apart. So far I've removed the 2 screws and 2 clips on either side. When I unclip the bottom 2 exposed clips it seems stuck on top of the tacho. What am I missing? Cluster is a mk2. Cheers

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mine seemed to easily pop apart when i done it. Not sure if i took any photos but the plastic housing at the top is male end of the dial surround is wedged between a metal clip and the top of the main housing. So id probably suggest the hairdryer trick and then abit of force. You could try levering each side out abit each time. Theres another thread on here that might be helpful?

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 13031128

Thanks. Mine seems to get stuck at the top of the tacho. Was yours a mk2 or mk1? I'm not sure of any metal clips apart from the ones on the outside? Thanks

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Given that the title is 996.2 of the thread and im the op, id say mines a mk2. There is some metal at the top of the main housing, the front clock face slides in between it and the plastic outer housing. Theres some how to guides on here and youtube but heat the outer housing up with a hair dryer and see if that loosens it

POST 12Original post

If you don't make it I have some old parts...

POST 13Original post

Thanks, okay so I've got the outer metal clips off. Is there anything else to do from the back other than the 2 screws? Thanks!
