It has the same carbon build up problem (2.0 had to be cleaned around every 30k).

I did just that in 2014 when we replaced our 2004 Cayenne S with a new 2014 Audi SQ5.

Suggestion
The SQ5 uses a modified version of the 3.0 T supercharged engine that is offered in the S5.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My father is thinking about selling his c4S. May need to go to an automatic so mom can drive it too.
I suggested looking for an auto C4S maybe even a cabriolet as they've always wanted one.
S5 looks nice, more back seat space, but the reliability worries me.
Anyone have any experience with an S5?
So I had an modified a4 as I was saving up for a nice car. It had the 2.0T. The carbon build up is an issue. It also had two timing chains/belt. It was my first Audi and I figured I'd stay German. I didn't like it and ending up putting too much money into and it still blew up (I think oil pump failed). Only benefits were that it was good in snow, 30mpg and had 4 doors.
I decided to test drive the S5 and C4S. I've always wanted a C4s but loved the S5 look. It has the 4.2, V8. From my research stay away from the B6/B7 2002-2008? It has the same carbon build up problem (2.0 had to be cleaned around every 30k). Those engines also have a timing chain and scoring cylinder issue. Hopefully the 3.0 T are good.
After the test drive I decided C4S. It was sporty. Had better appeal and was fun to drive.
S5 was like a boat, looks cool but wasn't fun to drive. It's more of a GT car for cruising on the highway in my opinion. I also don't think any other brand can take being driven and put away as well as a Porsche. So I went back to Porsche.
Depending on year, the S5 either comes with a V8 or a Supercharged v6. When I bought my 997 I actually went in to lease an S5 when they just came out (2008) but the P-dealer was right next door and leases on the S5's were very comparable to the finance payment I ended up making on my new C2, which is the route I ended up going. I didn't really love the V8 in the S5.
But now I own bot that C2 and an A7. The A7 has the same Supercharged V6 as the latest gen S5. I absolute LOVE that engine! The A7 is a heavy car (4500lbs+/-) but it MOVES. Probably as quick as a 997 C2. If I could have only one car it would be A7 all the way (love the four doors and hatch). S5 might be a little sportier, I am not sure, but I am sure it's a hell of a lot more comfortable than a 996/997 as a daily driver, and that engine is a beast, like I said. Yeah Porsche is a Porsche, but Audi makes some truly great cars. I have to say I like the interior in the A6/7 much more than A4/5.
And yeah, the A7 is as much fun as the 997 C2. For DD. I am sure on the track/AutoX would be diff, but I don't have time for that these days. It's just a completely different kind of fun (muscle vs handling but believe me both are fun)
Just my .02
Guy at work has an a7. Nice car for sure. Interior is way nicer than my 99' 996. Speed is pretty much identical in a straight line.
I'd take the 996 over the s5 as long as you didn't need adults in the back seats... ever.
Looked at both... Then spoke to my independent mechanic who does. Porsche audi and BMW. He said to stay away from the s5... Too complex and not reliable enough to own out of warranty.
Is the S5 going to be purchased new or used? I would have no issue buying a new Audi. I did just that in 2014 when we replaced our 2004 Cayenne S with a new 2014 Audi SQ5. The SQ5 uses a modified version of the 3.0 T supercharged engine that is offered in the S5. It's a wonderful, powerful engine. It sounds great and it has no problem moving a heavy SUV around and making it feel quick. Audi rates the 0-60 time for the SQ5 at 5 seconds flat. I'm sure it's better than that in the S5.
A newer Audi will be a major technology upgrade when compared to an older Porsche. Audi interiors are great.
The S5 is a very nice car and I'm sure your parents would like it, but it's a very different driving experience compared to a 911. They should probably drive it and then decide if they like the change.
Thanks for the insight. He'd be purchasing the S5 used.
The V8 chain issues worry me.
I agree, the interiors are amazing, he drove Audi's for years - but prices on them seems to get out of hand.
I took him to the autoshow yesterday and he really likes the CLA250. They are trying to figure out if they can get by with only one car (in which case it has to be auto). If they can, I'm going to take him to drive the S5. Otherwise, he'll hang on the 996 and probably get either the CLA250 or the Lexus IS...
