Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

3 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, I've owned my 996 C4 for nearly a year now and am loving it. This is my first post, but I thought I needed to make it in case any one else was like me. (I've been in the shadows, just reading and researching &#128512 When I bought my car, on the test drive the salesman showed me the sports exhaust button on the dash and said "It makes the exhaust louder!" He pressed it while I drove and said can you hear the difference? I couldn't but just said it's probably me, not knowing what it should or shouldn't sound like. Well after researching on various forums and YouTube etc, I decided that it wasn't right, someone had paid for the upgrade and I wasn't getting the benefit. (Also the button is supposed to make it quieter) I unplugged the relay under the dash, no difference in noise. I tried to unplug the connector in the engine bay, but the access was poor and the boot lid kept falling on my head. I laid on the floor and found the two valves and poked them with a long screwdriver, no difference. I sprayed wd40 on the valves and poked them while the wife pressed the button on the dash, eventually one kind of twitched a bit, but no change in exhaust tone. Luckily I work at a body shop and had a technician take the bumper off and have a look. We managed to get one valve moving again, but had to replace one. When I tried to order it from the local Porsche centre, it wasn't smooth sailing, apparently the sports exhaust valve setup thing is from the 997, they sent the valve from the 997, perfect match. They said many parts are interchangeable between the 996 and 997 and I had the 997 sports exhaust. Anyway, once the new valve was installed and the other "fixed" the difference in sound is amazing! It now sounds like a sports car, it sounded fine before, but now it sounds fantastic, like a big angry dragon, if you were approaching its treasure. The valve was about 85+vat. I just wanted to share, in case anyone else pressed the button and couldn't hear a difference and thought "must just be me" Trust me, if you can't hear the difference, something is wrong and it's worth paying to fix it. You will probably find that you fuel bill goes up though as you keep making growl 😀 Hey, your worth it!

POST 2Original post

Hi David. welcome to the forum and happy to here you manage to sort it out. do you mind sharing the part number for the valve if you have it handy? thanks. Meir.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, Thanks for having me I've just read through my original post and seen a few grammar errors etc, red wine and an IPad don't always mix well it seems I'll pop the part number on once I get into work on Monday, as the invoice is at work. When we did the job, we had to be a little creative as the little connectors snapped off on both sides and part of what we wanted only came as part of the exhaust. Needless to say the creative modification was smothered in lube, in the hope that it won't seize up again. But if it does, this time I'll know

POST 4Original post

Welcome! Good to hear you got your PSE working properly. The exhaust sound is my music whenever I'm out in my 996 too. My window is always down unless its raining or I'm at high speed.

Uh, between being in Vancouver on the Wet Coast and driving the Sea to Sky means it's never down then, right? Enjoy that glorious sound!

POST 7Original post

Amen to that. I probably wouldn't even notice if my window regulators were bad

POST 8Original post

"it sounded fine before, but now it sounds fantastic, like a big angry dragon, if you were approaching its treasure." Best quote ever! Anything that sounds like a big angry dragon is awesome.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The part number for those interested in the future was P997.111.680.00.

POST 10Original post

it should work the other way around... at least on mine it does... the default is PSE on with exhaust tone louder and when you press the dash button it goes quiet. there is a control build into the circuit that the PSE will shut off automatically between 40-75km/hr (don't quote me on exact number, but this is approximate) there is a thread on here showing how to cut a diode to disable the auto cutoff feature.

Yup - same for me. The default is loud, push the button for quiet. First I've heard of an auto shut off though - never noticed it on my car. Today is the day! Heading up the Sea to Sky this morning - the sun is out and the windows will be down

thanks David. so i understand you replaced the vacuum actuator only not the complete valve assembly. interesting enough, this part number also comes up as a Ferrari part. i guess same manufacture.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, it definitely goes quiet when I push the button, but the salesman was trying to convince me otherwise :-) It was the vacuum actuator that we replaced.
