The problem is our road doesn't have the final layer of pavement on it yet so the manhole covers are raised.
Leading evidence: 'road doesn't have the final layer of pavement' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'road doesn't have the final layer of pavement' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check rim as well' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I went through the process, was greatful that a couple of guys even offered to help but I told them I appreciated it but declined, installed my spare but noticed it too was a little low by about 10 pounds.

Hope they checked the rim as well to make sure it's not bent.

And I'm not saying you should repair a Z rated tire, but it makes it impossible to repair a standard tire.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My neighborhood is still under development so as a result there is always debris in the roadway - honestly I'm surprised it took so long for this to happen.
So driving into work today and I get about 2 miles away from my home. I stop at a light and smell a really strong burning rubber smell. I look around seeing if another car might be the culprit but it smells pretty bad. Look in the rear view mirror to make sure my car isn't on fire but thankfully not.
I start moving and the smell goes away. But then I feel the car handling a little bit strangely. Right before I hit the highway I pull over into a gas station. Look around and see one of my rear tires is low. Pull up to the air pump and try to fill it up with air. Every time I press the handle to send air into the tire I hear a woosh coming out of the other side.
So lucky me, in a suit and tie, I get to change my tire in the middle of a gas station parking lot. I had filled and inspected the spare about 6 months ago so I figured it should be okay. I went through the process, was greatful that a couple of guys even offered to help but I told them I appreciated it but declined, installed my spare but noticed it too was a little low by about 10 pounds. Fired up the air pump again and was good to go.
Got on the highway as my tire shop was a couple of exits away. Put my flashers on and drove an embarrassing slow speed with my hazard lights on. The car handled like a$$ on the exit ramp even at really low speeds, wow tires really do make a difference!
Arrived at the tire shop and had them inspect it - the sidewall was shot. He basically said once I smelled burning rubber it was game over. So they ordered a new one - should have it in another day or so.
But looking back I'm happy that this car includes something most new cars do not. My spare saved me 1+ hour of waiting for a flatbed and also standing there looking like a helpless idiot who can't handle an easy fix. I just hate the big red eyesore on my car now - but at least it lets people know why I was driving like a senior citizen.
Cool story. Hope they checked the rim as well to make sure it's not bent. Not sure what size you run but I know the 18's are very easy to bend when the tire pressure is low.
They are 18 inch wheels.
Good point. There was still a little bit of air left and the road I was on was pretty smooth but still worth checking. Thanks for bringing it to my attention as I wouldn't have thought of that.
I thought i remember reading somewhere that the spare tires was to only go on the front of the car, and that in the event of a flat back tire that the good front tire should be mounted where the back flat one was and the spare be mounted in the front?
I'm still waiting for run flats to be available in our sizes. My wife's 3 Series BMW has them and other than a slightly harder ride, they've come in handy on a couple of occasions.
That would have taken forever to do. The jack that is included doesn't go high enough to lift both wheels on one side off the ground. So I would have been there for a long time playing the old switcharoo game with three different tires.
I only had to drive the car 2 miles to the tire shop and another 3 miles home afterwards. So it wasn't as if it were used for a long period of time. Plus I was short-shifting at 2k RPM to make sure I don't burn up that narrow band of rubber.
Honestly I was surprised the spare did fit the rear. I figured I would chance it and if it didn't work then I'd figure something else out. But it did and for such a short trip served its purpose.
That's a great question as I got struck my lightning twice yesterday. Late in the afternoon a truck delivering wood joists and supports for a new home crashed into our mailbox while backing up down the street. I was on a conference call and couldn't get away but sent the builder an email asking them to fix it - waiting for a response.
But there's not really much I can do but be careful and try to avoid patches of the road that seem to have debris in the way. The problem is our road doesn't have the final layer of pavement on it yet so the manhole covers are raised. So I drive through here like I'm at a slalom event avoiding what I can.
I believe these last few homes should be done by the end of Summer. Meanwhile I'll be crossing my fingers I can make it through unscathed for the rest of the time.
