Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

(I posted this in the 996 Turbo forum too) Hi folks, Maybe I can get some input on this. My CDC (changer) in the trunk has been out. I went to the dealer (The Collection) and I was quoted an outrageous sum to replace it and the harness. Everything came out to almost $2K, including labor. Has anyone found a CDC non-factory replacement that worked with the rest oif the radio-navigation unit. If not, has anyone replaced the whole thing, Navigation, stereo, CDC? I am sure the local stereo shop can do the WHOLE thing at half the dealer's price (for just the CDC. Any advice will be welcomed.

POST 2Original post

MOST or non-MOST? This is (probably) the single most important question when it comes to how much it's going to cost you to re-tool. People have and do replace the whole thing. I removed my non-MOST system and replaced it with an aftermarket unit, a refurbished JVC from Crutchfield that cost $89. The reason it is so cheap is because it has no optical drive (i.e. no cd/DVD slot) - which also makes it about 30% shallower than most single-DIN head units - so there was plenty of room behind the radio for the harnesses and other wiring. I also installed a used Infiniti BassLink (because I am a tool and at one point I had TWO of them installed in my Corvette) behind the driver seat to address the abysmal bass response of the factory amp & drivers. Mounted horizontally (instead of vertically as pictured here), it's out of sight behind me; to date, nobody has noticed it or asked about it. In addition to working as a bluetooth speakerphone, it streams music via my iPhone (IHeartRadio, Pandora, and bluetooth audio), includes a front-mounted 1/8" audio jack, a full-size USB port, and compatibility with my SiriusXM tuner (which I haven't bothered to connect thanks to Pandora). I installed the hardwired mic in the overhead console and ran the wire inside the A pillar for a really clean overall install. My one and only gripe is that the head unit LED color does not compliment the 996's other interior colors. Now that I know the combination of a better head unit and additional low-end helps tremendously, I'll (eventually) upgrade to a slightly better unit with RGB LEDs so I can match "996 orange." Or I might just get my MacGyver on and swap out the JVC's white and blue LEDs with orange...

POST 3Original post

I bought a used eBay CDC unit ($100) for the trunk of my '99 after it would no longer eject or recognize the CD changer. For my experience, I'm afraid my issue has been user error all along. The 'new' one was advertised as working/tested from a respected seller. After installation....yep, I have the same NOMAG error and apparently not recognizing the changer at all. Eject is dead at the button. Eh, good thing I have Fister exhaust to listen to..
