Check around because you can get a key for less than $500.
Leading evidence: 'Check around' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check around' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Suggestion
The remote function of the key usually fails because the circuit board in the key fails (it breaks with age/time/use).

Would I be able to get an aftermarket alarm (Viper?) system and use the alarm remotes to lock/unlock the car?

Suggestion
I'm guessing if I use the blade to unlock the door the alarm will sound, I will see about getting some good ear plugs before proceeding.

You could also buy the "valet" key if you don't want to have the remote unlock/lock programmed and just want to use the key manually and start the car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Aloha! I have a 2001 996 C2. I only have 1 key and the remote doesn't work even after battery change. My dealer wants 500.00 for a new key fob and 170.00 to program. They will NOT do it unless I purchase the fob from them so the cheaper options are out. Would I be able to get an aftermarket alarm (Viper?) system and use the alarm remotes to lock/unlock the car?
No. The level of integration of the remote key fobs, key passive RFID pills, immobilizer (security) and DME makes it impossible to substitute for an aftermarket alarm and remote lock/unlock. Check around because you can get a key for less than $500. However, keep in mind that with a new key and key code, both keys will need to be programmed unless you have the key code from the original key. The remote function of the key usually fails because the circuit board in the key fails (it breaks with age/time/use). So with one new key fob, programming that to the car, and a non-functioning other key, you will be left with one key that works to remote lock/unlock, and one that doesn't.
Exactly. Just live with having to lock and unlock manually. I bought a new fob for around $170. I transferred the old RFID pill and the key blade to the new fob. It will start the car but won't the remote function won't work without programming. At some point I may get the programming done but it's not a priority.
You could also buy the "valet" key if you don't want to have the remote unlock/lock programmed and just want to use the key manually and start the car. Although you're back to square one having to manually unlock/lock.

I've bought new genuine keys from 5150 Motorsport, they had the best price I could find. I had to plead with my dealership to program it, a lot of them must have policies on only programming keys they sell. This is so they don't risk destroying your ECU with aftermarket/fake keys. Our cars don't like those... Although I believe its more of a Cayenne thing than a 996 one
Thanks for all the replies. My dealer in Honolulu wants about 700.00 (500+180+tax) to purchase and program 1 key. I HAVE to purchase the fob from them or they won't program it for me. They also refuse to give me my IPASS code. The service manager won't even give me the courtesy of a call back. Horrible service. Anyone have luck getting their IPASS code from a dealer? If so, how did you convince them?
Ouch! I tried to get the IPASS code but they refused.
They did program a key for me for free during The service though. $500 for a key is absurd it's more than the AUD price of $330...
Whats up with Hawaii??
Hello, lots of interesting suggestions I'm in a bit of a pickle myself. I wanted to update my fob because the panic button has fallen off the buttons are all faded. So I got a fob off Amazon that was compatible with my 2006 Cayenne S.
I was able to get the blade and board transferred into a donor fob, and it lights up when I push buttons but the car won't respond, not sure what the problem is. I'm guessing if I use the blade to unlock the door the alarm will sound, I will see about getting some good ear plugs before proceeding.
When you lock the car with the key, does the alarm engage?
The way to test that is to unlock the car and open the door. Wait... Do not insert the key.
Does the alarm go off after 30 or so seconds?
That is how it works on my 04.
Yeah, basically what I'm doing just need to start. I'll work out fob working later. I just heard there's a way to make old keys work from others. Just peaked my curiosity. Another challenge lol. Thank you for your help.
For other people. Nobody ever asked me background. Just started hating. Ive been working on cars for years. All kinds learning the hard way since 16 yrs old. Also had a dealership so programming keys came in handy. I like to learn and locksmith was expensive. Bought my 1st scanner back then and found out it could do keys. Hooked on saving money on that since. Also learned body work, paint and even had a frame machine and learned to use through studying. I got deep into cars. Still am. I've eliminated any reason to absolutely have to go to outside sources for repairs. Not bragging. I'm just saying as men that's what we do...learn.
I've also heard the rumor that fobs can be reused - its been going around for years. I don't think its a reality and even if it is a potentially 20-year-old key probably won't last long anyway. The key prices continue to climb, I wouldn't be surprised if they stop allowing people to buy keys and only allow you to buy them and have the dealer program them. The security system in these isn't very complicated.
I imagine it would like on newer cars. Looking online I saw it may have been possible the alarm didn't activate being that I left the hood open to not have to pull that cable again when we towed it from the guys house. Turned out to not be the case. It's my fault because I had door open and had to give it a jump to move the seat to pull the immobilizer.
That's what I heard too trying to find solution to my problem. Just stumbled across it online and shared they said it was possible. Now I want to see if it's really possible because people were told it's not. But some also said online that the Porsche dealer told them they couldn't program a new key in a lost key situation if the alarm is active. Then telling them immobilizer and new keys had to be order and programmed thru them. Also found online that it was just that they were incapable of doing it. If they actually were able to then that would mean they just wanted to get money out of them I guess. Or maybe the techs aren't trained for that procedure or aware. Idk. But I do know that ECU doctors can do what Porsche says they are unable to do. Also I know the tools ECU doctors use is available to public. I'm going to test that key rumor in the future. May just buy a used key and follow how they did it. Don't hurt to try.
It worked. Information is a simple Google search away. Just put in original question I was trying to get help on here. There's one in particular that has everything in it I just didn't realize it pertained to this module also. Actually, Google any problem you may be told is dealer only. Research doesn't hurt. It's just learning things others may not know. On to other problems with it. Happy holidays!
