Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Even the crappy piggyback tuner I used a decade ago allowed for switching tunes on the fly.
Leading evidence: 'Use decade ago allowed' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'car' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill garage would be fun' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If you are comfortable with the price and knowing what you know about the car and looking for a project car to turn into a track or play car well, this is probably the car.

Thanks for all the advice I currently have a 2000 cabriolet to drive and play with just thought a new project to fill my garage would be fun.

I could run a nice, safe tune for commuting and an aggressive tune for being an idiot.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thinking of building a track/play car and saw this. I am looking at a total rebuild (salvageable motor) or replacement. Tiptronics are said to be virtually bulletproof so seems like a switch/linkage problem. Fire away or walk or run away?

The '99 is considered by some to be a very reliable year, especially for examples that haven't already given up. So buying a busted '99 makes no sense to me.
The people who say "tiptronics are virtually bulletproof" don't necessarily say it on Rennlist. True, there are not a whole lot of "my Tip is hosed" threads, but those people who have Tip issues seem to have a lot of them.
Here goes the "you know you're gonna get bitched at" sentence:
If you want a track car, why select one for which cheap replacement engines are not available? I'm no Miata lover, but if I was going to set up a dedicated track car, it just doesn't make sense to NOT use a Miata. If you don't want a Mazda, a $5K C4 Corvette with $5K worth of go, turn, and stop parts can also be a competitive track car, and you can afford to keep a spare motor and a spare transmission in your trailer or garage.
Now, I understand that a track Corvette isn't a track 911; if you want a 911, a Corvette doesn't help. If what you want is a cheap 911 to beat on at the track, the 996 ticks the appropriate boxes...but getting a 996 on the track isn't necessarily the same thing as keeping a 996 on the track...it's all about how much you want to spend and when you want to spend it (you can spend a bunch now and a little more later, or you can spend a little now and MUCH more later...).
Seller says engine and transmission on their way out. Later mentions the Tip only starts in neutral. Hard to understand how one can get to the point the Tip is on its way out with just that symptom/behavior to go on.
Best if you can arrange it to test drive the car mainly to exercise the Tip to confirm other than the not starting in Park is the only issue. Afterwards you need to get the car in the air and ensure the Tip is leak free, too.
Tips are good transmissions but they are not bullet proof.
If you are comfortable with the price and knowing what you know about the car and looking for a project car to turn into a track or play car well, this is probably the car.
OTOH, you might consider trying to find an example that didn't have any engine or possibly transmission issues. One pays more money for such a car but gets to enjoy the car while in the meantime if he is so inclined can source an engine to rebuild.
Honestly though I prefer to rebuild an engine that is not manifesting any real serious issues. With an engine manifesting serious issues upon tear down one might find the engine is not a good candidate to rebuild.
Anyhow, if one sources a 2nd engine to rebuild when the rebuilt engine is ready one can sell the existing engine with it still in the car and still able to be fired up and run. One doesn't have to find the room to store the old engine until he finds a buyer.
Thanks for all the advice I currently have a 2000 cabriolet to drive and play with just thought a new project to fill my garage would be fun. Understand LS is out due to being a tiptronic but finding a replacement motor might be an option. Sell the bad engine if rebuildable or for parts.
I'm not a fan of installing an LS engine in one of the cars. Not so much from the purity aspect but mainly because I have not seen an example in the tin (so to speak) and I don't know how good the transplant is.
Putting a different engine in a modern car is complicated by the rather complex engine controller/engine management/sensor systems modern cars have and this certainly includes the 996 Porsche. While I don't know if this is the way it is done with these LS to 996 engine swaps I have no desire to go back to a engine fed fuel by a carburetor and a mechanical throttle.
Since you have a play car already then if you buy this car you can jump right in to getting the project underway.
The fuel and ignition management systems available now are amazing. No, you don't need to worry about rebuilding carburetors any more.
The tuners being used on big HP cars (drag cars, drift cars, etc.) allow you to upload fuel maps for the task at hand (AX, quarter mile), the conditions (prepped vs street), etc.
Even the crappy piggyback tuner I used a decade ago allowed for switching tunes on the fly. I could run a nice, safe tune for commuting and an aggressive tune for being an idiot.
