Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Apologies if this kind of question isnt allowed, but Im curious what members here would pay for a 996.2 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, black on black, 100k miles, with the main issues being that the IMS hasnt been done and the 2nd gear synchro is weak on downshifts if not rev-matched perfectly. Otherwise the car is in good shape cosmetically and mechanically. Has maintenance history going back at least a decade and is fairly well optioned. I understand its not the best time to be selling a cabriolet going into the winter in New York, but would appreciate anyones insight. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

I would guess under $20k since it sounds like it needs a transmission rebuild. Also cabriolet drops the price some.

POST 3Original post

Honestly in this down market time and all the issues Im thinking youd be lucky to see $18k $15k is probably my number sorry

POST 4Original post

$15K in agreement with EVOMMM My sister-in-law in NJ just paid a Porsche dealer $40K for a well sorted 996.2 Carrera 4 Cabriolet in Artic Silver with an IMS replacement and 1/2 as many miles (Yes, I know that seems nuts, but it was very well cared for and had a complete service record). That's my starting point. Deduct $10K for the dealer premium. Deduct $8K for the IMS.RMS new clutch. Since the labor to take the transmission off and on is already covered with the IMS RMS clutch, deduct transmission rebuild of $4K? We are now down to $18K. Given the mileage, the answer is probably closer to $15K.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Appreciate the honesty here. I dont think you guys are far off. Explains the lack of many serious bites at 20k. Thanks, all!

If that cabriolet was in CA, I would price it at 25K.

POST 7Original post

Hang onto it if you can until spring. The market will rebound slightly (new administration) and the weather will help you as well. But I would agree, it's a $20k in spring even with the issues you mentioned (down here in Texas).

Its not from an engine stand point the M96 was carried over with the base model, bigger noN serviced IMS for the S. The body was changed for the oval headlights and interior....Its a 996.3 in a sense. My next car will be a 997 Targa....

POST 9Original post

Another thing to consider is the hydraulic cylinders for the top. If theyre not already leaking they will be soon. I was just quote $2600 to repair mine on my 2001 c2 cab. My top still works fine but mechanic says theyre leaking. I dont doubt him. IMHO the mileage kills the price more than the IMS not being done. 100k miles on any car is my cutoff. I wouldnt purchase a car with 100k miles unless it was a cheap honda odyssey. GLWS Id say $15k if the top works well. Less if not.

POST 10Original post

A proper buyer will look at the owner first before they look at the car (this obviously only applies to private sale). Write a good ad and you are already ahead of the game. Be transparent and honest. $12-13K because of 2nd gear. ^that price is to get it sold. If you want to deal with idiots that text you things like "aw man, I had one of these! I should really sell my e36 m3 and get into this. I'll keep you updated." and then you never hear from them again, you list it for $18K. Anything above $20k will be laughed at because of 2nd. If 2nd wasn't an issue, it's a $16-17k car. If you are the original owner, that's a different story. And those are the first two words you write in the ad before anything else.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
