When it showed up the Boxster was away in storage, but i have a buddy with a 99 996 still on the road and he let me check on his as i wanted to know how it worked and figured i could give him his numbers.

Yes, the 99 996 is different from later ones when using Durametric and Snap-on, and I'd assume they would be for the 986 too.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Morning All I wont go into the details as Im sure you all know about cam deviation. Recently I replaced the cam-cam chain , tensioner pads and resealed engine covers as PM as car has 110k miles and all went well. ( 2001 BoxsterS ) I was curious as to what the cam deviation would be on this after the work to give us a baseline to watch for the future.. I didn't want to invest in Durometric at this time so I picked up a TOPDON600S. i figured this way I may be able to use this tool on other cars . . I have heard this tool has the ability to read the cam deviation. a guy even showed a screen shot of it on his 2001 Boxster S but an older software version...all good right ? When it showed up the Boxster was away in storage, but i have a buddy with a 99 996 still on the road and he let me check on his as i wanted to know how it worked and figured i could give him his numbers. When I ran it on his car I got no information about cam sensors or cam deviation, I was very surprised at this. Could there really be that much difference between software on a 99 996 and a 2001 986 ? I don't want to go into a rabbit hole of should have bought this device or that device .. but i was wondering if anyone has tried to use this particular tool on their 996 and what year was their car and was there any measure of success looking at cam deviation.. ? Thanks for those interested i will post below what the TOPDON put out for his particular 996 Thanks

POST 2Original post

Welcome cousin! Yes, the 99 996 is different from later ones when using Durametric and Snap-on, and I'd assume they would be for the 986 too. The cam deviations are still there, but are labelled differently. It's been a while since I ran camshaft deviations for anyone, but the PID descriptions are different. The software for your tool may not recognize the difference.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for responding thats what i thought may be happening . It is PID 06 for the 986 .. When i told the tool it was 996 I was surprised it didn't catch anything at all in the software ... Im thinking if it was an 01 or later, it may have parsed it... maybe ...
