Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Went to a "Local" Boston dealership today. Was looking for transmission gear oil. Read threads and concensus is to use factory oil. Looked online, figured I would establish a relationship with said dealership for future reference. They didn't have any of the gear oil, said it would be 3 days out and was very expensive! The excuse was that they don't keep much on hand for "older" cars. Back to the inter webs for part sourcing. They just want to sell new cars....

POST 2Original post

Thats too bad. The dealer by me (Napleton Westmont Porsche) likes old cars and gives us discount $150/hr for a vintage car. They always have the parts I need too. Only wrinkle is they tried to sell me a coolant cap for $74 (list) versus customer pricing ($35).

POST 3Original post

the problem - just in general - is that ur in boston

Porsche Manual Transmission Service Kit - Liqui Moly 00004330549KT | FCP Euro

POST 5Original post

For the most part, dealers only want to do factory warranty work.

POST 6Original post

Classic dealers are welcoming to older cars. I bought genuine gear oil before from FCP Euro, and Delaware Porsche is also a great source for discounted parts for us East Coast drivers.

POST 7Original post

I goto the dealer when I am lazy and just want a small part and pay a premium. Otherwise order everything online. Online Silver Spring Porsche had best price at the time for porsche gear oil. My local pasadena dealer price was almost 2x as expensive. But not surprising. For my second 996 I decided to use Mobile Delvac because I plan on tracking it and will change fluids more often. That was a cheap $50 for way more than I needed and came in two days from Summit Racing. Any supplier serves some purpose, dealers just very little

POST 9Original post

My dealer in Redwood City treats me very nice with parts discount. They always have what I need or can get it the next day.

Yea, I agree. Porsche dealerships want to make money period. Porsche of Atlanta that is owned by the Jim Ellis family has always gone over and above for me at no cost. But like most Porsche service centers, they're gonna be crazy expensive over independent shops. I don't get caught up in the whole "stealership" mantra. They're not forcing you to service your car. Walk away. EX. they wanted about $4,000 to do a brake job on my Cayman. That included rotors, pads, and sensors but not fluid bleed. I did it myself for under a $1000.

POST 11Original post

Will second this. I talked to a service manager at the Porsche Dealership near Manhattan Beach, CA and he said they're actually trying to position themselves in a way to attract more of the classics. So they'll put the classics out in the front of the dealership in the lot, etc... and they have classic techs there too. I have thought about starting a shop for this very reason. Between working on old cars and the skilled trades (electricians, carpenters, etc.) there is a huge opportunity for young guys to start these companies and get involved. Right now it's all being done by immigrants or guys that are close to retiring. The older guys will be phased out and you will struggle to find a reputable shop to work on your car. It'll take ~30 years or so, but it'll happen and we need more of the younger generations to step into these roles/businesses. Some of the Porsche dealerships are trying to do this - they're trying to be more approachable. And honestly it is a nice experience (going to the dealer). They'll take pictures of your car, you can talk to the tech, etc...

POST 12Original post

The problem is that a lot of these small Dealerships are owned by fairly wealthy individuals who buy a Franchise, Lease the building/land from Porsche , they have all the new cars on a "floor plan"/payments and when first went to work for Tom Williams/Birmingham Porsche they only had $125k worth of parts in Inventory... $125K in Porsche parts doesn't go very far....Every time I diagnosed a car and went to the Parts Dept for parts they had to be ordered from the Atlanta Warehouse 2-3 days arrival time... It got better over the years as I pitched a bitch about having to wait on parts because I was used to working in a large FoMoCo dealership that had $1M in parts inventory and when I went to the Parts Dept. I got what I needed to fix that car and got it out the door and started on the next one.....and if the part happened not to be in our inventory the Warehouse delivery was the same day in just a few hours.............Huge difference.....

POST 13Original post

Interesting, I didn't know Porsche dealerships could be franchised. Maybe an opportunity there

My Targa was serviced at Auto Atlanta at a tune of $3.3k for a 60k service.....Henessey Porsche of North Atlanta did the same 60k within 6 months apart for $2.3k and the parts were more expensive here spark plus $201 lol One of the reasons why I bought, was the work put into it. I thought Auto was a Indy.....Maybe not anymore

I dream of starting a shop - hiring some mechanics to work on Porsche's. I'm in Toronto. In between 3 porsche dealers. The porsche independents are always slammed. There is a SAAB independent quite close to me that looks like he is just about done - very few SAAB's left. Often wonder if he is even aware of the Porsche potential service market. I will say that this is not unique to Porsche. I struggle to find good marine mechanics too. I do most things myself but as I'm getting older both for my cars and boats, would prefer to outsource the work. Hard to come by good and available techs. A number of years ago I needed my valves adjust on the ATV. 3 weeks at the local dealer - always slammed. Also seems that the good ones don't last very long. One of the boats is due for a water pump change and some other maintenance work. I had this done 5 years ago at a very good, welcoming place. Was just checking to get it done early next year, business has folded. Have to find somebody else argh!

Quotes source post: 19785429

Wow, that low level of parts inventory is surprising. I guess it explains why the few times I needed parts when getting Pcars state inspection/emissions tested at a dealership, I needed to make a return trip to the dealer because the parts needed to be ordered.

POST 19Original post

You guys know lots more than I about Pcar repair and such, but Porsche is known for having different parts for seemingly the 'same' car. Here's my recent example for my '01 996 C2....I needed an engine cover strut. I asked the dealer to order one. A mistake was made..the parts arrived for an '01 996C4. Not the same; in fact, there are 2 struts on a C4, and just one on a C2, and they are different. Pretty hard to have the right part in stock....

I bought my '02 Cab from them in '21. They could have done a better job on disclosure since I bought it sight unseen, but I got a good deal. Only 1 owner, low milage, highly optioned, price began with a $2 and they financed it. I drive it like my Ducati and it seems super happy.

POST 22Original post

You are going to a dealer with an out of warranty Porsche? If it is the Boston area dealer company I have off the top of my head their entire line of dealerships have the worst customer service I have experienced ever, in any industry. I have 4 years of having to deal with them (if it is the dealer I have in mind) and I am not looking forward to it. So happy the warranty is up on my Audi. (kinda) That being said: https://www.autoengineering.com/

The Porsche $125K Inventory quote was from 2004....when the Carrera GT v10 engine was only $85K .....Probably unobtainium now...lol The FoMoCo $1M inventory was from the 1980's- 90's..........I worked for Mitsubishi in between but have no idea what the Inventory total was but I never had any issue getting the parts I needed

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 19785984

That $125K is worth about $209K in today's dollars, so that was a pretty slim inventory.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 19786353

Yes a very slim Parts Inventory , what made it even worse was a lot of that $125K was in Crash Parts...ie...fenders, hoods, bumpers,,ect... for Local Body Shops... I made them send all that back for credit and buy more Service Parts.....they could order the Crash Parts and a 2-3 day wait wasn't a big deal, but is a big deal to have to wait for Service Parts.....A lot of small Dealerships operate this way...

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 19784255

Was it the "local" one to the South off rt128 or the one to the Southeast off of 3? Bought a brandy new '24 911t from one of them and as I was leaving, I saw a Porsche/Martini t-shirt that I thought my Wife would like. Since I was forking over a cashier's check for ~$150K, I just said "I'll take that". Get home and the Dealership had called my Wife, they had her number, looking for a credit card to charge the $75 shirt! I hear the one in Norwood is more supportive of classics and I've bought filters, etc. for our oldies there.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The 128 dealer. Won't be going back anytime soon. At least I got a pen with the logo on it....The short sightedness of them and that T-shirt tells me all I need to know!

POST 28Original post

Good... I bought Porsche Classic transaxle fluid from Pelican for our 986 and will be doing the same for our 996. As your research concluded, these cars transaxles do best w/ OEM fluids for some reason, they are a bit finicky. Learned that the hard way. We're also Cape Porsche folk! Should you need a local shop, Sports Imports North Falmouth if you haven't found them yet, Scott and Reed certainly know their Porsches and a fun place to visit in a quiet corner of the Cape.

Yeah, there is a place for a good dealer and a good indy depending on your location, requiremnts, skillset and willingness to wrench.
