Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

(I wasn't the first one in there- The part I replaced had Audi markings on it.).

Lying on the seat and floor upside down with little room to move one's arms is not a fun way to spend the morning, so to make the next time easier, I replaced the tiny set screws with M4-0.7 x25 Cap Screws.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Today I replaced the ignition switch in my 2004 cabriolet. Lying on the seat and floor upside down with little room to move one's arms is not a fun way to spend the morning, so to make the next time easier, I replaced the tiny set screws with M4-0.7 x25 Cap Screws. (I wasn't the first one in there- The part I replaced had Audi markings on it.). The big challenge of the job is to find a tiny screwdriver to remove the setscrews that hold the switch in place. I fabricated my own stubby screwdriver out of a 1/4" (1/4" drive) socket and a narrow straight 1/4" hexagonal screwdriver tip. The resulting screwdriver was about an inch long with a reasonably wide 'handle' to turn in the limited space under the dash. Once the set screws were out, I installed the cap screws in their place (while the ignition switch was out). I filed a rudimentary point onto the ends of the cap screws to mimic the effect of the set screws prior to installing them. Installation of the new switch was a breeze and securing it with the cap screws was much easier than tightening the setscrews.
The next time I tackle this job I expect it to go much faster than this time! Here's a pic of the installed CapScrews.
Thanks to all the forum contributors who have posted DIYs for this procedure which I found very helpful. I hope this helps someone still contemplating the task!
Dang! some things never change. When I had my 356 back in the '60s, I used to get parts (unofficially) at the VW dealer!
Hey! Here's a pic of the 'screwdriver I used! It worked great!
