Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wouldn't the 986 Boxster HID's be a viable upgrade for the 97-01 996 halogen headlamps? Anything special needed to make them work?

POST 2Original post

Yes, they will work in your car. if you want the HID beam to swivel upwards when you activate your high beams (for more light output) you will need to buy an additional Litronics control module and wiring harness to install as well.

Good to know, thanks. Why don't more 996 owners do this? Even an older HID is an upgrade to even older plain halogen headlights.

POST 4Original post

Theyre expensive headlights to obtain. Its probably cheaper to retrofit your set of halogens instead. Also, I liked the idea of keeping the halogens because its period-correct for the car. Halogens can be very bright. The biggest issue is the hazy plastic lenses. I drove a halogen-equipped car with cheap bulbs, but it had clear glass lenses (which never haze) and was amazed by the light output.

I see. There are some on Ebay that appear to be in really great shape, and as a bonus, have the darker gray housings. Still MUCH cheaper than Litronic sets that I've seen.

POST 6Original post

Consider buying a whole new aftermarket HID retrofit system to upgrade your lights instead. Look at www.theretrofitsource.com - they sell complete HID kits with ballasts, wiring, bulbs for a very reasonable price. I purchased a Morimoto brand HID projector system from them a few years ago to retrofit headlights on my Jeep, very happy with the results and the price.
