If they have not been done you should consider replacing the timing chain guides which can be done without splitting the cases.

Happy Sunday! Sharing some pics of our 2000 C4 cab 6spd that my father and I share. Acquired it last year for a good price as had its share of issues. It has 101k on the clock. I have an 01 turbo coupe tiptronic as well. We�ve done quite a bit of maintenance on this car as well as addressing some of the known problems. Prior to our purchase it already had AOS, LN IMS done, as well as clutch and flywheel.

*LN IMS retrofit is a dual row, was done in 2016 and is approaching 70k miles of use. Unfortunately, it wasn�t replaced again with the clutch and flywheel by previous owner in 2021. My shop hasn�t had one fail but I know it�s past its particular lifespan and replacement interval. Obviously there�s xxxxxxx of other things that can take out an M96 but my shop says it�s my decision whether I want to do the job**

My feedback is that a lot of people here will tell you to spend $4k on the ims solution.
I took my retrofit out and put in a regular steel ball bearing with the seal removed.
Yes, I�m debating that�.would more so go that route if I�m keeping the car forever. But with 100k on it, probably more cost effective to do another retrofit. I�m sure the engine will have other things go wrong before the IMS at that point
Consider:
Coil packs
Timing chain tensioners. Do you hear any clack-clack-clack on startup and then the idle is quiet? That would be the timing chain smacking the chain guides until the tensioners pump up. Replace all 3. No guarantee this will get rid of the startup noise. Replace regardless.
Depending on the age of the air oil separator (AOS), consider the UAOS upgrade. Engine vacuum should be 4 to 6 inches of h2o--good idea to check it.
How is your mpg? The hydraulic lifters have seals which degrade over time leading to collapse. Somewhat invasive to fix.
Pull your sump plate, how many plastic bits do you see? If they have not been done you should consider replacing the timing chain guides which can be done without splitting the cases.
Have your camshaft deviation checked--this will give you insights on the chain guides. Durametric software is one way to do it yourself.
Does it backup up smoothly in reverse or have some shudder? If shudder, the transmission mount is shot. They simply fail over time.
Some say injectors have a 10 year service life.
All idler bearings are dry at this point--replace.
Appreciate that feedback. Considering driving it a lot this winter if it�s pretty mild. Has new Michelin All seasons as of last year and the skinny 17s shouldn�t do too bad. Will be putting the hard top on in a few days. 50 in Chicago today
-Looks like ignition coils and AOS done in 2021 around 90k miles. Gas mileage pretty good and no shudder in reverse.
