Some of these aftermarket parts are good and some have been revised to be changed out sooner after we were told it was the last solution.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took my 996.2 Targa to a shop that used to take car of my 911 aircooled car a while back. They did good work back than and I still feel they did good work this time around and gave me Porsche parts# on a computer print out, instead of hadwritten sheet with no parts on my last experience at a different shop.
Well I have been finally able to have a moment to see what my recent repairs on my Targa cost for the water pump, thermostat and hoses. Only OEM parts were used and I am ok with not getting the lower stat thermostat as my car is fully stock and Indy explained that the ECU is programmed to work with with the stock thermostat, which makes sense to me. Others will say I should have gotten the LN unit. Unless true hard proof that has saved an engine from bore scoring, I see that part working more for a modded engine from Hartech

I feel the thermostat was within range of prices I am seeing out there, the water pump I am unsure what model I got but I feel I got ripped off when I see Porsche branded water pumps from dealers going for $265.72 online, The hoses are about half off online as well, Some of the smaller parts like bolts are within in range, the antifreeze seems witin range as well, I thought they were going to Mobile 1 and I am glad they put in Motul so I am good with that, the Engine plug price annoys me.
I feel this shop did good work, but some of the prices are just the stupid Porsche mark up and had I done the work myself I would saved more and put that money into other things needing fixing. But thats on me since I have to take it to the Indy and understand they have make money as well.
I am going make the effort to start working on the car myself for 2025, the price I paid seems inline with what others have paid as well, its just some of those parts prices irk me.
Price looks about right with factory parts. Sure, you can go oem and save a couple of bucks. As we all know, DIY will save you quite a bit of money in labor costs. But some of us would rather have our indy do it. No right or wrong answer on this. But no question, it costs a couple of bucks to keep a 20-25 year old 911 running. To me it's worth it. To others it might not be. Either way, your cooling will be in good shape.
There has been a lot of debate on the water pump Pierburg OEM or Porsche, they are both the same unit not using the metal blades. Members have used both with no isues and feedback here. Im pretty sure AutoHaus Az was the soruce of these parts, the mark up on some of the parts is annoying when, Porsche Delware was offering the Porsche branded pump at $265.
Yes the indy did good work, I mean for $170 per hr they better lol....with the internet we know all and the prices are all over the baord
The ecu may have been designed to work with the stock thermostat, but the LN thermostat was designed to work the with the stock ecu. I remember watching an interview of Jake Raby describing their involved design and testing process.
Yeah, its a tricky game. If you get in front of the parts before failure, you can take advantage of sales and stock pile parts at good prices and then schedule procedures with your indy.
But in my 22 years of ownership, sometimes parts go when you least expect, which means you gotta do it now. The key is to make sure its not the IMSB, AOS and water pump because they can lead to catastrophic engine failure. For sure, if you are tracking your car, you need to address oil starvation and cooling as well. But its easy to bullet proof the M96. The rest of the parts are just an annoyance when they fail but not catastrophic.
You are in good shape.
I know about it since being on the boards for a while, It was prob a tad cheaper than the OEM. I just went OEM since my car has zero mods or even shows zero signs it needs it. Some of these aftermarket parts are good and some have been revised to be changed out sooner after we were told it was the last solution.
