Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

According to many mechanics and technicians I know, WD-40 is not a lubricant, it is a solvent and its lubricating properties evaporate.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I noticed my 02-996tt steering wheel telescope function does not lock. I took a look under the dash and this is what I saw. The rod touches that end piece. Then nothing happens. Can someone guide me as to what should happen.

POST 2Original post

It looks a little corroded...Have you tried a little WD-40 (or other solvent) and some lubrication (a little grease)? I'd try that first, and go from there. Whatever you do, don't force anything. Good luck

My thought as well, did water ever get in the car?

POST 4Original post

I had a similar issue (lever would not unlock). I spent a week applying steady pressure to it at stop lights and finally it worked its way free. Telescopic steering wheel worked after probably being in the same position for 20 years!!! My next issue was that I could not lock the lever. I took a good look at the spring mechanism and decided it needed a little lubrication. A couple squirts of WD-40 and 5 minutes of engaging/disengaging the lever was all it took to bring back 100% functionality.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks I'll give the lube a try

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After lube and a little heat from a heat gun the piston popped out. Now the lock works properly. Thanks everyone.

POST 8Original post

It may be helpful in loosening things up, but for lubrication, maybe try a different product? According to many mechanics and technicians I know, WD-40 is not a lubricant, it is a solvent and its lubricating properties evaporate. Lots of other options: Triflow is good stuff in a spot like this.

POST 9Original post

Reviving an old thread. Just purchased my car and the telescoping lever under the wheel was laying in the front trunk. Can anyone provide a link to a parts breakdown of how it is supposed to assembled? And how it is supposed to operate? I think I am missing some springs etc and would like to get it working. Thank you

POST 11Original post

Thank you very much! Exactly what I was looking for. Do you just rotate the lever to push the plunger in to get the telescopic adjustment? Now I need to find out where to get the missing parts....!

POST 13Original post

If you are in the U.S.just pay for shipping and it’s yours.I would remove the universal joint and the short shaft for a more compact package. Regards -Mike-
