From the information I can find, I am about 99% confident I can change all of the bearings in the front diff with the exception of the pinion shaft bearing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 99 C4 has a bearing rumble coming from the front differential. By listening with my stethoscope, I can identify rough bearing noise from both the rear of the diff and forward near the output shafts to the axles? From the information I can find, I am about 99% confident I can change all of the bearings in the front diff with the exception of the pinion shaft bearing. It is retained by a nut that I am unsure how to remove. Does anyone know the size of the nut and what tool is used to remove it? It appears that a tie rod tool might work to reach the nut, but I dont want to dive into a project I will be unable to complete. Does anyone have any input on replacing the pinion shaft bearing in the front diff?

POST 2Original post

I just bought a whole unit and swapped it out. Lots of guys take these out (convert to 2wd/rwd) so they can be had for reasonable $. I think I paid $275 shipped - but it was 4 or 5 years ago everything is more expensive now

POST 3Original post

I recently pulled mine and did a reseal job, are you sure about the gears being bad? Pulling the trans can be done in less than an hour and putting nine new seals was easy. Not sure about takin the nut off and how you would get the torque correct on reinstall.

POST 4Original post

California Motorsports offers a rebuild service for these front differentials, https://californiamotorsports.net/co...t-diff-service I haven't done one yet, myself, but there is nothing particularly complicated about them.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
