Mine is a C2, and my issue is apparently different than what wide body models have.
Leading evidence: 'apparently different than what wide body models have' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'apparently different than what wide body models have' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check bolts and they are good and tight' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have to agree my depo lights have never given me any trouble for insurance I just ran and checked my bolts and they are good and tight.

I was on terrible pot hole filled roads, so I guess there was more vibration than usual.

I even tightened both of them just before my trip.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took a 1,500 mile trip this past weekend up through the Poconos and back to SC. Great trip despite a flat and cracked wheel (another story), but due to wheel issue car sat until today.
Drove 2 miles to the drug store, came out and found my taillight hanging down by the bumper, by its harness. Thought I'd gotten lucky, but when I put it back on I noticed the chip. Arghhhhh!!!!
I followed the recent thread about loose Turbo lights, and the protectors you can buy. I long ago noticed they could come loose, and indeed developed a practice of checking them every time I checked the oil. I even tightened both of them just before my trip. I was on terrible pot hole filled roads, so I guess there was more vibration than usual. Seems locktite is the answer for the screws, but the chip on my taillight is a problem I won't be able to live with. Couldn't find the missing chip, and I looked.
This is becoming a serious issue for us! Must be the age of the dying tail lights... I too would have a hard time living with a chipped tail light. Sorry bout this
I arrived home to find my left rear dectane led on my 997 fully swung out 180 degrees, the bolt had jiggled loose and fallen away.
Don't know how it didn't break that edge corner part or fall off and drag. Lucky.
Started using loctite
Maybe it's time to slide the lights out a bit, add some clear silicone to contact points, and slide it back into place and tighten it back up. You can always cut/tear the silicone if you need to, but it'll keep you from dragging your tails down the road accidentally...
If that was my taillight, I'd try to repair it with 2-part clear epoxy and then paint the rear surface red with a black topcoat...at least until a new tail light arrives.
That SUCKS. The only time my 996 has been hit was a guy who backed his F450 into it - and then parked and came trying to find the owner, which was awesome. Nailed the fender, but it missed my 2-day-old taillights by a few mm.
I only drove 2 miles, so I'm going out on my bike in the morning to see if I can get lucky and find the missing piece. Longshot, but my luck has been good of late!
i've owned 3 996 C4S's - each one of them had some form of stress cracks however they were located at the top of the tail light. the stress cracks were minor vertical cracks located about 1/3 from either side of the tail light edge.
i haven't seen too many with corner cracks like you have suffered.
I've had my Depo lights for about 5 years or so and they haven't come loose despite the seriously chopped up roads here. Of course now I have something else to worry about
. I don't remember if I used loctite or not.
The screw was just sitting in the housing on the car. In fact, when I went to retrieve it it immediately slipped out and down under the bumper cap, and onto the ground. Guess I'm lucky it didn't get lost.
To be clear, I don't think the chip has anything to do with the Depo lights. I think it got chipped when it came out and was flopping around on the side of my car. Can't believe I didn't hear it. The mounting points weren't stressed. Just the screws coming loose is the issue.
Yeah Dave, some problems I have YOU just can't solve for me! The tire help was plenty!
Depo lights I know nothing about! Isn't there two bolts to hold the light in? Is this a "wide" body 996? The light savers keep the lights in place if they have cracked/broken mounting flanges. I don't believe it will keep bolts from loosening up...I could be wrong on that...I have never had loose mounting bolts and had my stock lights out several times troubleshooting problems. I read that over tightening is one reason, besides vibration, that will accelerate cracking of the flanges.
The wide body 996's suffer from this issue - it's been around a long time. It's not a failure of the screw but the plastic flange that holds the light in place. I would think all 996 wide body owners would want to install this:

Yeah, thats what I was thinking but the OP description sounds like it is a loosening bolt issue?? I applied the light savers due to cracked/broken flanges on my C4S.
OP here. Mine is a C2, and my issue is apparently different than what wide body models have.
Nothing wrong with the light, just the screws tend to come lose. Although these are Depo lights I had the same problem with the stock units.
I just checked mine and the the screws are still very tight after several years and about 35k miles. I probably used Loctite as I have some in my toolkit and can't think of any other project that I've done where I would have used it.
