We tested the spark plugs together with the coils outside the ignition chamber, while I started the car at the same time - the spark is clear.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
I have a problem with my 996 C2 2000 Cabrio - manual transmission.
The service center did a complete rebuild of the engine, the head, piston and valve on the right side - passenger side were cracked. The aforementioned engine elements that were bad were replaced, the heads were depressurized, all the seals and necessary parts were replaced.
The complete timing chains were also replaced.
But, at the first start, the problem appeared on the right side (Bank 2 - 4-6 piston). At the first start, the engine ran, but there was no work on the right side. The engine runs on three cylinders, which work on the left side behind the driver, but not on the right side.
Gasoline, spark and compression occur on all six cylinders (11-12 bar). The timing is set correctly according to Porsche Tools. I also watched a few videos and according to these videos, the engine timing should be set correctly.
Please, what should I focus on next? Has anyone had the same problem?
Thank you!
If its true that u have fuel and spark then it must be the timing. There r some tricky steps that r not always clear in some manuals. There r procedures for rotating the engine when timing the other side.
I would re check the timing and post a detailed description of how u timed. We may find a missed step. If it is timing hopedully there was no internal contact.
The service center did a complete rebuild of the engine -
oh really...then take it back to them and have them fix it. You are in way over your head and want a simple answer, that you are not going to find here.
It sounds like the shop that did the rebuild did not rotate the motor 360 degrees after timing Bank 1. If the motor is not rotated 360 degrees after timing bank 1 then the timing on bank 2 is the same as Bank 1. You have the equivalent of two 3 cylinder engines running in parallel but the ignition and fuel pulses are 180 degrees out. The engine needs to have bank 2 retimed to be 360 degrees from Bank 1. If you look you will probably see that the valves for cyl 1 and 4 are in sync when they should be opposite each other (when cyl 1 is at the firing point the valves on Cyl 4 should be on overlap.
That's the problem, the service did this step and after cylinder bank 1, turned the engine 360 degrees and made the same adjustment on cylinder bank 2.
He followed both the instructions and the videos, for example this one:

And this one:

So these pics were during the rebuild? Or do u have the motor out of the car now? Also did they remove the bank 2 variocam to replace the pads? If so u will have to verify that it was timed correctly.
Also so we dont make assumptions. How did u test spark and fuel on bank 2? Did u use the inline noid testers for the fuel injector signal and a spark light for the plugs?
Example of noids

These photos were taken now, engine was removed from the car after the rebuild after an unsuccessful start. I'm standing next to it.
The pads were changed, all 4 of them.
If you mean the eight pieces of chain between the cams, then we have already solved this issue and everything fits.
We did not use that noid tester.
We tested the spark plugs together with the coils outside the ignition chamber, while I started the car at the same time - the spark is clear.
At the first start, the spark plugs in cylinder bank 1 were burnt and wet, in cylinder bank 2 the spark plugs were like new - unburned and also wet from gasoline.
It appears to me from the attached photos d photos (no.4) that bank 2 is at overlap. Based on that it appears to me that Bank 1 is not properly timed if the photos were taken without rotating the engine. It appears that the intake valve has just closed and it has not rotated enough. Could it be that they timed Bank 2 and then rotated the engine 180 degrees rather than 360 degrees? Just my thoughts.
Mark

Something is definitely wrong here.....all 4 cams are different .check the numbers on the cams to make sure they are in the correct location/ position...
Also the Actuators are bank specific and have numbers and marking for Cyl-1-3 / cyl 4-6 .. make sure they are on the correct bank...
Then go back through the timing sequence..
The 2 YouTube videos you linked above contradict each other. Man in a garage has wonky timing info in his video that is corrected by the Nathans Porsche Workshop video, which follows the factory process.
Hard to tell from your pics if both banks are at same TDC.
with bank 1 at TDC this is what the notches on both banks should look like. (Both point out). In your photos one points in, one points out. If the photos ARE both at same TDC then yes your timing is out. Again - Man in Garage is erroneous on this and omits a crucial step. Follow factory/Bentley as explained in video 2.
I've revved the engine so many times that I'm lost in where everything is.
So I'm asking for advice on how to start from the beginning, from cylinder bank 1.
I think I have cylinder bank 1 set up correctly, but the transition between cylinder banks 1 and 2 is not working for me.
Thank you for the advice on how to proceed with the timing.
You lock the crank shaft on Cyl 1 TDC.
Perform the cam timing with the right tools, fitting correctly on bank 1.
Then, rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees, lock it again.
Perform the cam timing with the right tools on bank 2.
Then you are done.
For timing, I suggest Jakes videos recommended above by ZuffenZeus.
You used to be able to just purchase 1 section of his series from Amazon Prime video.
Just purchase the timing section if that's all you need.
If you have to but the entire series, it's worth it for all of the extra tips.
While Youtuber's may have the best of intensions, the omitted or wrong information when rebuilding an engine can be catastrophic.
I'd avoid using anything Nathan or Man in a garage put out as a rebuild guide.
On this topic Nathans is reliable. He accurately calls out the issues with other videos and it clarified a lot of confusion for me. I cannot vouch for any of his other stuff but I am grateful that he corrected Garage as that video is a mess.
This is just my experience. I do agree that factory process needs to be followed here, not video opinions, not forum advice.
You still can purchase the individual Streaming videos on Amazon Prime, but IMHO, the best deal running is currently from LN Engineering for the entire series on DVD. They usually stop the 50% off sale on Cyber Monday, but it's still up while supplies last.

Guys thank you very much for the tips and comments, M96.1 is timed!
The problem was on Bank 2, where the cam was rotated 180 degrees forward which caused the entire Bank 2 to misfire.
Thank God it didn't cause any damage to the engine!
