All that said, it doesn't really matter as I've replaced a huge amount of the running gear on the car due to it's age(and performance gains), which resets the starting point.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello All, First post here, so don't gut punch me too hard! Just purchased a MY03 Cab. Having fun taking care of neglected maintenance. But to my question-on the carfax, mileage from new is consistent up until 9/21. Went to a dealer for a basic service, 33+++K miles. Next entry on 10/21 has a state inspection or such and now mileage jumped to 82+++K miles! And it has accrued up to the current 88K miles. I have a couple of different scanners that I have tried to use to get into the ECM or such to see if there is a correlation. Can't find anything. I am thinking cluster replacement or such. The 2 different dealers are local to Boston and I will contact them but I think we all know how that will most likely go. The wear and tear on the car is in line with a 40K mile car, i.e. no wear on bolsters, steering wheel, etc. There is a good $5-7K jump in value for the lower mileage if I can prove it. Would just like to get to the bottom of the mystery. Any thoughts??

POST 2Original post

Milage is stored in the cluster, hours r stores in the dme. Other then estimating "miles/hour" there is no way to figure it out. Its possible to swap clusters and the new cluster milage will remain but i would figure the po woild have had it reprogramed for the correct milage considering the finacial gain.

POST 3Original post

Never rely on Carfax for anything. 90% of maintenance is never reported to Carfax. Most independent shops don't report anything to Carfax. Are you worried more about the mileage or the value?

POST 4Original post

Yeah, I'd be interested in why the mileage doubled on my car also.. get a Durametric or PIWIS 2 and get all the info from the cluster and DME...VIN numbers---mileage--hours---with this info you can probably figure out why....or come to a reasonably hypothesis..

POST 5Original post

It’s very possible that the inspection shop fat-fingered the data entry.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the responses. As I stated, the mileage up till 9/21 was very consistent in the reporting, than to jump to 88K from 33K in one month is perplexing. I am not really worried about the value, just would like to get it sorted. I have a friend with a German shop that may have Durametric or PIWIS 2.

POST 7Original post

Ensure the reading is in “miles” not switched to “kms”.

Definitely in miles. The mystery continues....

POST 9Original post

Mine has a similar case of a bump up and down in mileage on the Carfax report. The bump up occurred during a smog test. I wrote it off as incorrect entry as there was no way they could've put 30K on the car in a month. Then, later on when diagnosing a P1109 error, I sent the DME & Immobilizer for testing and found the DME had a different VIN written on it in permanent marker. This doesn't explain the mileage bumps if its stored in the gauges, but it does explain a one digit error in the VIN when reading it on the computer. All that said, it doesn't really matter as I've replaced a huge amount of the running gear on the car due to it's age(and performance gains), which resets the starting point. Drives like new. It seems the only reason you should worry, and try to find the answer, is if it is a rare model that you are keeping as original low mileage for value. Good luck!
