Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I came across a local 997 OEM 3.8 Intake Box for a really good deal. I've seen the swap of the 997 and 997S intake in the 996 several times. I kept hearing the 3.8 box is the best but now I'm not sure. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Pictures attached.

POST 2Original post

997.1 3.8 airbox on a 996.x is widely considered to be, at worst, “it can’t hurt”. Plus it’s a looker. Just be sure to use the 3.8 snorkel.

I've heard the 3.8 snorkel requires moving the SAI pump while the OEM 996 snorkel fits right in. Either way, I'll give it a try.

You don't mention what year your car is but on my '99 C2, it fit with no issues at all. If you do use the 3.8 snorkel, you need to change collar that snaps into the engine lid to 'Sealing ring part # 997.110.250.00'.

POST 5Original post

I did the swap on my 2002 C4S. While I've read a dozen accounts of it just dropping right in without any fitment issues, I had to take a Dremmel to mine and remove some of the plastic "fins" near the center mounting bolt. Good luck.

POST 6Original post

Don't forget that your X51 intake has an extra pipe that goes to a venturi valve on the back of the intake and plugs into the elbow between the TB and intake box. You'll need a compatible elbow hose.

This. 3.8 airbox dropped right into my 40AE. I could not for the life of me get the mounting screw back in, but the airbox has been totally secure including a track day with just the rubber posts that drop into the chassis. Swapped the 996 snorkel for the 997 and was back on the road in about an hour. I read the same things. Probably better, at worst it doesn't hurt.

POST 8Original post

I needed to tweak the airbox near the engine cover latch area, and I needed to relocate the secondary air pump to clear the 997 snorkel. Contrary to other comments I found that the the 997 snorkel got along just fine with the 996 collar. They slip together nicely. (Anyone want to buy a 997 collar, cheap?)
