Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

After just checking things out I see that the joint where the CAT joins the muffler pipe, all 3 bolts do not have nuts on them and are very rusty.

From there as De Jeeper suggested, hammer the studs out and replace with some grade 10.9 bolts with lots of high temp anti-sieze.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First time under my 2003 today to do oil change. Just purchased last week. After just checking things out I see that the joint where the CAT joins the muffler pipe, all 3 bolts do not have nuts on them and are very rusty. I can try to chase the threads with it assembled, and pray I get it on straight. But concerned about the ones that are beyond repair. Are they pressed in or?? Could always drill it out and just replace with a SS option. Any suggestions appreciated.

POST 2Original post

They r press fit studs. U can hammer them out after heating them some and get replacements or use bolts

POST 3Original post

This is one of those exercises that can quickly go sideways.I just went through replacing all of my exhaust hardware and broke many bolts. The joint between my headers and cats were so rusted that even after I managed to break all the hardware off, I still had to fight and hammer the flanges to get it all apart. From there as De Jeeper suggested, hammer the studs out and replace with some grade 10.9 bolts with lots of high temp anti-sieze. Don't use stainless.

Thanks for the input. Can you recommend what to use other than stainless? Figured we could avoid the rusting moving forward. I am sure you have a good reason to not use.

POST 5Original post

Few good answers here: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...st-system.html short answer: stainless generally isnt as strong as a 10.9 bolt unless youre paying big money for specialty grades stainless bolt + nut can gall together and can be worse than a rusted bolt potential for galvanic corrosion
