I just checked back, and they're also now $50.00 higher.

I also checked Sonnen and Sunset that day and they were about the same price.

I also disconnected both fuel line bolts and that gave alittle extra wiggle room.

This is a big help because you can wait until the tank is fully installed before putting in the sensor.

, Your screencap was for the 996.106.157.03 part, which has been replaced with the 996.106.157.04 part number.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Will a 996.2 Coolant Expansion Tank fit on 996.1? I have a 99 C2. Read up on this and haven't see anyone 100% confirm it will. From what I see I think it should fit just the 996.2 is just a bit longer than a 996.1. I made the mistake of replacing only the bleeder valve on mine and now its leaks horribly. Taking the screws out I guess made the holes to big in the plastic and now its leaking. If anyone can confirm a 996.2 coolant tank will fit a 996.1 it would be greatly appreciated!
I believe the final verdict was no. Do yourself a big favor and buy a Genuine Porsche tank, not OEM. Yes, the price is ridiculous, but unless you're willing to do the job every year or two just bite the bullet and pay for the real thing. I paid for a Genuine Porsche tank from AutohausAZ but they scammed me and sent something else. I ultimately got a tank from Porsche Livermore for $476. Previously, my Made In Germany OEM replacement tank lasted only two years. The job is such a PITA that you won't regret spending the extra cash for the real deal.
Edit: I stand corrected as Dharn is the man. However, This job is difficult enough with the proper part that I don't think it's worth it to make it more complicated by using the wrong part.
I put the 996.2 tank into my 996.1 and it is definitely workable. I been meaning to do a write up on it and have many pictures. There is a second mount clip toward the rear which is not on the earlier cars but I by passed this. I should say that I did this when the engine was out of the car but it could be done with the engine lowered a bit as is really required with the 996.1 tank.
thanks for confirming! From what I see on my 996.1 is theres a black hard tube of some sort about where the longer piece of the 996.2 tank extendeds to. Looks to be enough room to clear but hard to say. That big black holder bracket looks to be enough support also without having the further back bracket. Would greatly appreciate some pics when you have the time!
I think that was kind of the whole point of the thread, 996.2 tanks are much cheaper. BTW, your dealer charged you 3 times the price of places like Gaudin and Sunset.
Gaudin seems to use dynamic pricing. If a lot of people look at a part, the price goes up. They do have the best dealer pricing around though shipping can be a bit pricey.
@mffarrell
, Your screencap was for the 996.106.157.03 part, which has been replaced with the 996.106.157.04 part number. The .04 was more expensive than the .03, that's the reason for the price difference.
Anyway, I just received the 996.106.157.04 part number, and I'm going for the install this afternoon in my '99 996 Cab.
@Dharn55
,
if you have any tips for me
, I'm all ears. Wish me luck.
Yea and the .04 is probably made by one of the vendors that make the ones that everyone complains about. The ones the cap doesn't even fit well on...lol
The "updated part#" can be due to an actual change in the part, or just a change in vendors....( inside info)
Just something to keep in mind because I doubt that Porsche is doing any R&D on improving any 996 parts..
Had a guy on FB confirm this weekend he put the 996.2 tank on his 99. Let us know how it goes. Should go in the same as the old tank is just a bit longer. I dont think youll have any issue.
I was able to install my new 996.2 tank (p/n 996.106.057.04) in my 1999 996 C2 Cab. Below are some photos, and my thoughts and suggestions. I made a modification to the mounting bracket that really helped. (see below)
996 coolant tank bracket modification
Differences in the Tank designs.
1. The 996.2 tank is a bit longer.
2. The inlet ports are at slightly different angles, especially the one near the fill port. However, the hose can be flexed to accommodate.
3. The level sensor port is moved to the side, instead of the bottom. This is a big help because you can wait until the tank is fully installed before putting in the sensor. The same sensor is used in both tanks.
4. The side bracket design is slightly different, and still useless.
5. The tank is SLIGHTLY TALLER. This makes the installation just a bit more challenging, and it was already very challenging.
6. The 996.2 tank #996.106.057.04 was $118. The 996.1 tank #996-106-147-56 goes for over $480. Only use a Genuine Porsche tank. I used and aftermarket tank from Pelican before, and it only lasted 3-4 years.
Installation Tips for a 996.2 tank in a 996.1:
1. I used this YouTube tutorial in general.

2. Lower the engine as much as possible. The limiting factor seems to be the O2 sensor wires, located on the right rear of the engine, near the right taillight. They connect down to the exhaust. Make sure these aren't stressed, or disconnect them.
3. Make sure your engine jack is centered!
4. Zip-tie everything you can out of the way. Hoses, wires, whatever.
5. Keep an eye on the hoses under the tank in the engine compartment. The drain port and level sensor port seem to snag on these during installation.
6. Wait until the tank is installed to insert the level sensor. There is room to reach it in the side-mounted location.
7. Bring your best patience, and your best expletives. You will need both.
8. Due to it's greater height, was unable to get the tank in place without removing the black plastic bracket that supports the tank. Once this was out, the job was easier.
9. I had to modify the bracket so I could get to the mounting bolt when the tank was in place.
I cut the front from the bracket with a saw
, which allowed me to access the front mounting bolt with a small ratchet. (sse photos) I only installed one of the two mounting bolts.

Installation success!
A few arm bruises, scrapes, and many profanities later, the tank is in. Good luck.
got the 996.2 tank in my 99 coupe yesterday. Cutting the bracket is the way to go. I only used 1 bolt when reinstalling. Followed the instructions and it wasnet all that bad. I also disconnected both fuel line bolts and that gave alittle extra wiggle room. Getting the tank out is harder then putting it in. The hoses are a bit different on the 996.2 tank and I used the twist screw driver style hose clamps which made things easier reinstalling the hoses. All in all Im just glad I didnt have to spend $500 for a 996.1 tank.
Bump on this. Does anyone have a rundown of which new hoses/pipes are needed to update an early '99 to the later style tank? I believe there was a changeover at some point.
