I saw Atlanta Speedometer in my earlier searches; their web site did not show any repair service for the later than 1999 Porsches.

The backlighting on the Oil Pressure gauge of my 2002 996 C4 Cab works, but the red indicator needle does not light up, rendering the gauge unreadable at night (have to use a flashlight to read pressure).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The backlighting on the Oil Pressure gauge of my 2002 996 C4 Cab works, but the red indicator needle does not light up, rendering the gauge unreadable at night (have to use a flashlight to read pressure). I'd appreciate any information in the following areas: 1. Can just the red needle be replaced? 2. I the answer to 1 is NO, can just the oil pressure gauge be replaced? 3. If the answer to 2 is NO, then is the only solution replacing the entire gauge cluster? Or, are there other options? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

I googled "porsche 996 gauge cluster lighting" and found several DIYs on replacing LEDs and so on. You might find some hints in those about what the problem might be, and how to correct it. Good luck, and please let us know how it goes.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

wdb, Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, my searches (prior to posting) had not produced anything near my specific situation. I'm hoping that the collective technical knowledge on this site will come to rescue. The problem, however, is not a "show-stopper"; just a nuisance.

Thank you for the link. I saw Atlanta Speedometer in my earlier searches; their web site did not show any repair service for the later than 1999 Porsches. Based on the info in the link you sent me (above), it now seems Atlanta Speedo can indeed repair my cluster. Will call them and arrange repair. Thank you very much. BTW, I also contacted Palo Alto Speedometer, and they told me that their work is limited to analog Porsche gauges up to 1998, and that for the 996 and later models, they only do odometer resetting and certification.

POST 7Original post

Ive got 2 spare clusters that Im saving for parts. Ill locate them tomorrow and see whats what. From what I remember, the oil pressure gauge is clipped in but only tied into the main cluster board by a ribbon cable. actually found some photos on my phone.

If the oil pressure gauge is as you've stated, that answers Question 2 in my OP. Once you verify that, then my search for the oil pressure module starts. Anxiously awaiting hearing back from you. Thanks, Bahman

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

e30rapidic, Thank you for the pictures. Sent you a PM.

POST 11Original post

So the needle definitely lights up from behind somehow. But is it lit from the stepper motor?!?

POST 12Original post

That all makes it look as though it's possible to replace just the oil pressure gauge.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 19202310

I would bet there is an LED under the gauge, lighting the needle through the clear shaft that holds the needle.

POST 14Original post

These definitely look like surface mount LEDs which would be lighting the rest of the gauge, and its not totally clear from the last pic but I'm guessing there's one more directly under the clear shaft and that's the culprit. If you're handy with a soldering iron it seems replaceable, but if its cheap to swap the whole part that seems easier.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

e30rapidic, in Post #11, has provided excellent pictures which show exactly how the oil pressure module and needle are configured and attached to the cluster. I am currently trying to source a complete oil pressure module, preferably new, and fix the cluster. If I cannot source a module, I will attempt component replacement. It may also be a loosened connector. I appreciate all the help and suggestions so far and will update my progress.

correct! I just opened mine up a bit to verify/confirm.

POST 17Original post

@Bahman I am facing the exact issues that you've described. Did you end up finding a solution? Thank you in advance! @e30rapidic thank you very much for the photos!

I was able to purchase a working Oil Pressure Gauge from e30rapidic and successfully replace mine. During my research, I visited DC Auto in Rocky Mount, NC and purchased a used cluster with some modules missing, as a spare. It doesnt have the oil pressure gauge. You may want to give them a call and see if they have another one laying around. Great people to work with. The oil pressure gauge is common to all 996 clusters, and by buying a cheap non-operational cluster, you can harvest the oil gauge. Makes your search easier.
