It's been years since I ran my car in the snow, but a good set of snow tires with an lsd was alot of fun.

I run custom 17" Momo branded wheels for summer, with the conti all season dws06 plus tires.

I'd be remiss if I didn't note that, for our all wheel drive cars (C4, C4S and Turbos) mounting the correct sized tire sets (sticking to factory recommended ratio's front to rear) is critically important to the health of your drivetrain.

I have run Continental DWS6+ and Michelin ps2 on my e46 BMW 330Ci, in a few inches of snow & the ps2 were basically undrivable as you would guess but with the dsw6+ it was manageable, not perfect but they could handle a few inches of snow.

When you could find snow tires a number of years ago, I ran a set of Dunlaps that I purchased thru my Porsche dealer which were (F) 225x40x18 and (R) 265x40x18.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just checked tire rack and you are right there is literally nothing available. Was not expecting that lol, I have never had snow tires tho and don't know anything about the sizing for them.
I got winters for my C2, 17" Carrera ( the factory 17s on .1 Carreras look like turbo twists, but are for some reason called Carrera) wheels from tirerack. They are veredestein wintrac pro, but they didn't have many sets, and they are old datecodes but regardless they sure are sticky.
If you have them then, an old set of 17s might be better or easiest to find rubber for. The tires are narrower and on the rear anyway, slightly taller (they didn't have matching rears) for a centimeter more clearance, which never hurts in snow. Screenshots of the sizes purchased are below. I run custom 17" Momo branded wheels for summer, with the conti all season dws06 plus tires. The rears are factory 255/40ZR17, compare that to the centimeter narrower wintrac pro. Narrower is better in snow anyway. Low profile tires in the winter are meh.
The sad thing is that they are not mounted, I decided to store my car for the winter this year, it was running rough and I had no time to get it to a Porsche Indy or dealer, the nearest is 2 hours away. I think it's a small vacuum leak so in spring I'll tackle it myself, I bought a tester, but it's cold and I'm lazy. We just got snow, actually just finished shoveling. We didn't get as much as forecast.
Anyhow, heres the sizes I went with, below. There's plenty of old 17s out there, on East coast we have DC Auto, West coast has la dismantlers. Or you might get lucky and a local PCA member might have some in their garage for cheap?
Doh
....After I wrote this, a quick search of tirerack turns up nothing in 17s either, when I search by car...
It might be my zip code has none though. I bet if you call tirerack they can order for you, maybe even in 18s. Good luck! Next winter I might even mount mine and drive the damn thing. It sucks to think I've got 45k into this car and it sits unused, in a previously mouse infested garage. I think I've killed them all, but who knows. Grrrr.
Not many.
Easiest thing to do is get a good set of all seasons that can handle cold weather snow and rain. Like a Continental DWS6 Plus. 225x40x18 and 285x35x18 will fit. You may also be able to fit 235x40x18 and 295x35x18 as well. Sure helps if you have a LSD on the car to maintain power evenly on the rear.
Other option is to jump on a set of 265s if/when they become available, which is not very often. Plenty of 225s available for the fronts. There are 255x35x18s available by one of the big manufacturers. Can't remember who. Either Bridgestone, Michelin, or Pirelli. You can look on tire rack which is where I saw them.
It's been years since I ran my car in the snow, but a good set of snow tires with an lsd was alot of fun. Car tracked beautifully until the snow got above 4 inches then it plowed the snow. Never ran all seasons on my car, but will probably pick up a set of Conti DWS6+ for next year to run on one of my extra wheels for the colder months. I got them for my kids cars and am impressed with them.
I looked for 18" snows when I bought my C4 Cab and couldn't find any either. Wound up finding a set of stock 17" 996 wheels and purchased 205/50-17 and 255/40-17 Pirelli SottoZero 3’s for my car. I used them for about 2,500 miles and they have been sitting on the rack since I purchased my Cayenne.

I bought a set of winter wheels (turbo twists) with Pirelli winter tires (Sottozeros ???) mounted on them. Theyre not the correct stock 18 sizes but they do work, and didnt cause any issues for me. I dont remember the sizes offhand but theyre a good deal larger than stock sidewall heights (265/F 295/R maybe) all I know for sure is that they didnt rub on the fenders or wheel wells
I'd be remiss if I didn't note that, for our all wheel drive cars (C4, C4S and Turbos) mounting the correct sized tire sets (sticking to factory recommended ratio's front to rear) is critically important to the health of your drivetrain. Anything out of that spec and you could experience issues, expensive ones.
Yep. I have a 2002 C2 w/o PSM and with a LSD that I put on the car. When you could find snow tires a number of years ago, I ran a set of Dunlaps that I purchased thru my Porsche dealer which were (F) 225x40x18 and (R) 265x40x18. They came recommended by the dealer and worked well.
Don't know how PSM and/or AWD will respond to those sizes assuming you can find them.
In place of creating my own thread, I thought I'd bump the most recent 996 snow tire thread. My 996.1 C4 has the standard summer tire fitment - 225/40-18 in front, 265/35-18 in the rear.
The first exceptional challenge I faced was finding a snow tire that comes in 265/35-18. The front size was easy, the rears damn near impossible. I searched the big tire websites (Tirerack, etc...) first, and I came up empty. Then started looking at the individual tire manufacturers - Bridgestone, Michelin, Nokian, Vredestein, Continental, Yokohama, etc..... The
only
265/35-18 snow tire I could find was the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4.
The second challenge was then finding that tire. You would think that the Tirerack's of the world would have them. Nope. Next I engaged with Michelin US directly, they just said to go find a retail tire store that sold Michelins. It took a few tries, but I finally got a local shop that was able to order directly from Michelin. He couldn't get the fronts too, those I had to order from Tirerack, but the local guy could get the elusive 265/35-18 rears directly.
Is this the only 265/35-18 snow tire out there? I guess I'm good for a few seasons anyways....
I have these too on my 996 Turbo, they work well although I didn't get the chance to try them on snow. Definitely seems to be the best option for our cars.
If you want a real snow tire, get Blizzaks, 18-255/35 will work incredible in the snow. Don't want a wide tire in the snow. 996 with these tires is a blast to drive in snow. Will make the 996 a go skiing car. If your going to do some real snow work, best your car isn't lowered.

i have the Blizzak WS-80 on my Golf R. I was trying to stick with a stock tire size on the 18" turbo-look wheels so that I can convert the wheel to full time winter duty.
You might try prioritytire.com. They have some brands that I never heard of, but that is OK, I'm new at the 996 game.
I have been looking for 18" winter tires. NBD, they are NOT needed for absolute speed and handling, just get real. I have diesel 4WD truck to do the "heavy snow" stuff, the C4S is just frosting. I think a low cost set to get me/you around in winter is just fine. Take them off (2nd wheel set) when the snow goes away. My C4S is not DD.
Sizes are dependent on wheel width, but I only have 2 sets of 8/11x18 rims. Your choice and decisions...
Whatever, it isn't rocket science....
YMMV
