Just my opinion, but seems like abusing a great return policy to return used consumables like oil.

didn't know they advertise sending back used motor oil.

I told the clerk it was used oil and that I get credit back for the used oil.

It just seems to be a waste of natural resources to send used oil across the country for a refund.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Recently did my first oil replacement from FCP Euro and will need to send back the original oil. Ive filled up the original containers with the old oil but was wondering how you guys ship it. Do you put the oil containers in trash bags in case they leak? Tape up the tops?
Ill be sending a set of spark plugs and coils in the same box (its how I ordered it all in the first place). I have all the original boxes and packing materials.
thanks
M
I've never bothered to send it back but when I get oil or detailing supplies most of them are tapped on the lids and in plastic bags with zip ties around the top.
I drive a lot for work so I change my bmw x1 oil/filter every 4-5 weeks. The fcp program works great. I save box they shipped in and re use it. Goshippo finds me cheapest shipping.
Just my opinion, but seems like abusing a great return policy to return used consumables like oil. I couldn't do it.
Not judging anyone just sharing my 2cents opinion.
And guess if vendors didn't like it they wouldn't allow it. Suppose/guess not a lot of people do return old oil so they don't lose out overall, as the mark up on oil is small so just 1 return would mean a loss for the vendor... At least on that 1 purchase... My guess is if it was being done a lot it would be unsustainable for the vendors and policy would change..?
jmho
Can you not ship used oil UPS Ground ?
I did a little digging and could find that new and used oil is not considered a flammable liquid, and the only restrictions I could find seems to indicate that large oil transporter vehicles are the only thing that have a need to be regulated ??
And no, I wont be returning any used oil,if I think it has any value/life left, I'll use it in my lawn mower..lol
But they advertise it? They list what they won't take back so I think it's unfair to call it abuse when they say they will take it back. I am banking on the fact the majority of people won't return something like oil. It builds a lot of good will and I bet its grown their business a lot over the years. They are one of the first places I check for replacement parts and I've never returned anything other than parts I ordered and did not use..
Yup, see your point, it probably is a loss leader like you say. Saying 'abusing' might have been a little strong.
didn't know they advertise sending back used motor oil.
IMO, the hassle and absurdity of pouring used oil back into jugs, cleaning everything up, boxing it up securely and leak free, and mailing it,
is ridiculous to me, and seems the mony savings isn't worth my time.
But thats just me and my personal opinion, again not judging anyone...
I am with you 100%, it seems like a hassle but hey if you wanna do it go for it! I can barely manage my own life right now so sending oil back is just another thing to add to the list of things I need to do.
I ship my used oil to them at the walk in UPS store. I told the clerk it was used oil and that I get credit back for the used oil. He said what? Are you kidding. Also FCP said if they sold tires they would be covered also. Damn!
2 liters of BMW diff fluid for my M3 costs $185, an oil and filter change with dt-40 costs $235, I send both back. One box for $420 credit. I have only paid for 1 oil change for my 911 when I first bought the car.
I did this once just to try.
First off, you now have to order the replacement parts first. So say you order a kit which includes 5l jug, 2 1l bottles, an oil filter and a drain plug.
Once that arrives, use the same box to ship back the same parts. The used oil jugs must be double bagged. Target sells store brand zip lock bags, the largest size (15 gal I think) will fit the big one.
Double bag them, place in box, add packing paper so stuff doesn't move around (it came that way so put it all back in).
Tape and seal, use pirateship.com to ship UPS ground or whatever is cheapest. Pro tip - the weight of the box should be identical to what was on the FCP Euro label, so you don't even have to weigh it.
If it's a little off, pirateship will bill or credit the difference.
I'm sorry, can someone explain this to me like I'm 5? You buy oil from FCP Euro. You drain your old oil, put it back in the same oil jugs, then return it and get your money back? I'm confused...
1. You buy oil from FCP Euro. Put it in your car and drive around.
2. When it comes time to change the oil, you buy the same oil from FCP euro you bought the first time.
3. Change the oil.
4. Put the used oil back in the oil jugs you just got
5. Fill out the return form
6. Pack and ship the oil back to FCP euro
7. They will credit you the price you paid for the oil you put in the car in step one.
M
That went pretty painlessly. I used shipo. The shipping was about $18 but that also covered the coilpack kit. Took about 4-5 days from when they received it till I got my credit
or generously rewarding you and incentivizing to continue to shop there lol. And also it really only seems like a crazy idea with items like brakes, fluids, and other routine maintenance items. But they also sell plenty of items that you might replace only 1 time, and by the time you need a 2nd replacement comes, car might be out out service or sold.
no one else offers anything like this. And its why I purchase my stuff for my 996 and my x5 from FCP. And I am in the camp who have never returned oil, but I want to!
edit: also, Im not 100% certain on this, but I feel like their products are priced at a slight premium from competitors? Seems like its enough of a premium to be able to offer this service, but not enough to be priced? I could be totally wrong as Ive only placed a handful of orders, but I remember things being slightly less elsewhere on the internet.
yes they are slightly higher on many products.
I will shop around on items that are not consumables.
my friend needed an alternator for his bmw. Eeuro was $75 less.
It just seems to be a waste of natural resources to send used oil across the country for a refund. Once there are a few spills along the way I'm sure it will stop.
But $ is $! I will continue to shop rockauto first. FCP is definitely higher price for most items.
Im sure there are more drips from the oil pans and fuel pump nozzles of the vehicles transporting the FCP oil returns than actually coming from said FCP oil returns lol
Sending used oil back for store credit, wow. Ive done probably 10 oil changes on my car, so were talking about hundred and hundreds of dollars. I think I have a warped rotor, too, so guessing that would have been covered if I did buy it from FCP (I didntt).
I might have to look into this
I have 2 rotors, wheel bearings and pagid pads foung back today. Im sure it will be $70 in shipping but ill take the $1k credit and get some front pads ti continue the cycle.
To comment on the pricing, yea some sruff is 5-10% more but i got a cfs center rad for 10% less to it works out.
If you have the luxury of not driving you car for 10 or so days:
Buy oil from FCP Euro.
Put the new oil in your engine
Store the empty bottles and box that they arrived in.
When it's to change the oil, drain the engine and transfer the old oil to the bottles and box that were stored.
Fill out the return form.
Pack the oil (and RMA) and ship back to FCP E. In my experience, nine quarts of DT40 packed weighed 16.5 pounds.
FCP E will issue store credit in the amount
you paid in step one.
Apply the credit and buy new oil.
Install new oil when it arrives.
Repeat from Step 2.
HELLO ALL, NEW MEMBER JUST TO CLARIFY THIS LOL.
WHEN YOU RETURN THE USED OIL/ PARTS THEY WILL TRY TO REFUND TO YOUR ORIGINAL METHOD OF PAYMENT, IF THAT FOR ONE OF THE MANY REASONS IS NOT AVAILABLE STORE CREDIT IS GIVEN.
I always got the refund back in my debit card and I have over 30 orders in. If you want to avoid the credit possibly using paypal for payment can work around that. they will at least deposit it to you paypal balance.
Its a good system if you can ship back fairly cheap and you have the time! You could also pile up a few orders and send them back at once as long as you don't overpack boxes. Anything that can be put back in the container is valid. So no aerosols, fuel additives, etc. Cheers!
Because of the amount of driving I do each month I replace my bmw x1s oil every 5-6 weeks/4-5k miles. Oil kit is from fcp and Ive saved quite a bit. I buy a new oil kit, replace oil, store used oil, buy postage, and ship back oil/filter. I just hit 170k miles and hopefully will last for a while. Cant go wrong with fcp.
I just sent 7quarts and the filter box back today via USPS. The usps employee said that I cant ship it priority so I had to put my large flat rate box in another box (slightly bigger) and ship it. The large flat rate box would have been $26 from LA to CT and the new box was $55 from LA to CT.
At $55, its not even worth the hassle. Can anybody from LA please let me know if they found a cheaper way?
note: I asked him if I were to get a box with the exact dimensions of the large flat rate box and send it, how much would it cost? He said it was $50 just based on the weight.
