Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking at buying a 2001 996 Turbo from a dealer. They ran a DME report and the odometer mileage does not match what was shown in the DME report (70,323km vs. 65,496km). Does anyone know why they wouldn't match? It was imported from the US in 2007 so it maybe a conversion error? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

It's possible that the gauge cluster was changed. The odometer mileage stays with the cluster. I know someone whose mileage increased by 30k miles when they installed a used cluster to address a problem.

Can you post the report ? The DME doesn't record "mileage", it records "hours" so I'm suspicious... The instrument cluster on the other hand records mileage but can be re-programed when a new factory cluster is install or an old one can be hacked...

POST 5Original post

Well, that DME does show mileage ( DME 7.2) ...but suspiciously doesn't show VIn or Trans Number, and shows 2 programming operations... Mileage into Hours is 39 km per hour average... What's more concerning is the Over-Revs were only 15 hours ago......Back in the day we were not allowed to Certify any car with Over-Revs...then they loosen it up to the Over-Revs had to be at least 50 hours old to make sure no engine damage was done by the over-revs...

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the feedback guys! Ya, there are some concerns with the vehicle. Over-revs, no documented service history since imported from the states in 2007, 5 previous owners, some repainted areas, failing spoiler hydraulics, and the dealer is unwilling the let me get an independent PPI. May have to walk away from this one, but its priced well, probably because all of the issues. Potentially to many problems for me to live with, so the search goes on I guess!!

Even range 1 overrevs? Can't those be incremented by just hitting the rev limiter?

POST 8Original post

Has anyone confirmed that the mileage is exactly the same in both places in their car? I am the second owner and have all service history on mine. The distances are close but not exact. I can confirm that the previous owner idled the car for long periods of time due to lack of use.

Range 2. 1.4 seconds above Range 2 threshold of 7900. That’s concerning. For M96 range 2 divide ignitions by 395 to get time above 7900.

POST 10Original post

Turbo has a Mezger engine, can generate range1 overrevs by bouncing the rev limiter. Most tunes increase the rev limiter so most tuned cars will have 65535 range 1's and lots of range 2's. Does not seem to matter.

POST 11Original post

The mileage you see on the DME is a calculation. Its hours x average km/hr or something like that. When I got my DME from Porsche it was hours, and then there was a calculation done. If someone drives their car at 30km/hr all the time, the DME will be waaay off of the ODO.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

what do the "programming operations" represent? Apparently there were 2.

POST 13Original post

It's VERY common to reflash the ECU to get more power. A Cobb Accessport costs around 1500 and can add 50-80-100-150 hp with no other changes. Each time the tune is put on the ECU or removed to go back to stock a programming operation is counted.
