Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently bought a 996 and I'm working through the various catch-up maintenance on it. I've reached the cosmetic part of the list and I'm hoping someone here can help with this one. The instrument cluster has two control *****. One for the clock and one for the odometer. My car was missing the odometer ****. I bought replacements (part 996.641.911.00) but when I went to install the part I realized that the problem runs deeper. It looks like the **** is supposed to slip over a plastic base that sticks out from the dash. Unfortunately, that is the part that is broken on my car. I can live without it but I'd rather not have bouts of OCD whenever I want to reset the trip odometer. It looks like I could super glue the **** onto the stub of the broken base and just accept that I have to break it worse if I ever remove the instrument cluster. But before I go crazy with that, I'm wondering if anyone here has better ideas. For example, is it a nightmare to get the instrument cluster out and access the switch and/or whatever other parts are involved, is the part itself actually available, etc.? Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

The post isnt available to purchase. Many years ago I found someone who was making them and selling on e-bay. I dont have the seller info anymore (sorry), but may want to try searching ebay, etsy, etc. May also want to look on 3D printing file sites like thingiverse.com and printables.com to see if any files are available. If you dont have a 3D printer, there are services that will print files for a nominal fee. Once you get the part, replacing it is pretty straightforward

POST 3Original post

You're talking about the stem that the ***** press onto, yeah? I got you, I think my parts cluster has two intact spares. PM me.
