Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, I encountered an issue with my 2002 996 C2 today. While idling in neutral at a red light, the engine suddenly stalled. I was able to restart it immediately without any problems, but after that, the idle speed has been noticeably higher than normal. Additionally, both the front and rear fans are running continuously, which usually doesnt happen during city cruise. When I turned it off and left it for about two hours before I started it and drove a couple miles again, the idle speed went back to normal. But just to be experimental, I put it into neutral again then the same issue happened. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks ahead!

Quick update. Its the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Code P0335. My indy is replacing it and hopefully things go back to normal.

POST 5Original post

I doubt it but I'm rooting for ya! I suspect an A/C switch that is wonky or the wiring to that switch is chafed and grounds thereby switching the A/C on without you touching the a/c button. The combination of symptoms point in that direction whereas a wonky cps leads to no-start or dying engine. I see you have automatic transmission. Im not familiar with them but if has a switch that switches when the gear selector is put to N, then possibly it is broken. In that case the DME doesn't receive input it can lower idle RPM. One could argue it would store a fault code or that the idle rpm control would be able to do so but as I said, I'm not familiar with auto box and their interface to the DME. Having said all this, find out (for instance by putting up a separate post) if a trouble free 996 with tiptronic/autobox raises idle rpm and (or not) switches on the fans, when put into N(eutral). What's engine temp when you hear the fans running? It could be a coincidence that you observe idle rpm increase nd fans kicking in simultaneously when putting autobox into N. I'm getting all curious now 😀

Hey thanks for the input. When I was on my way to the shop this morning the car stalled again when I came to a red light and this time I didnt put it in neutral but leave it in drive. It also had a hard restart this time. I had to crank twice. So I dont think the D or N is a factor in this case. The car seems to run normal now after the CPS replacement. I went for a road test to get the engine warm and then left it in neutral for about five minutes. It didnt stall this time. If the ac had turned itself on then I wouldve noticed air coming out from the vents or heard the some noise from my compressor, no? Im still curious why the idle speed went higher

POST 7Original post

I don't think the interior fan switches on or changes its speed merely by activating the A/C so I don't think that the absence of that is a clue. Easy enough to check, though, by pressing the a/c button. A/C compressor should run quietly but the activation of the electromagnetic clutch is certainly something you can notice by paying attention to (change in) engine sound
