Its not available in gloss finish like we have in our cars...so I used another one...Its $33.00 at Sunset.

I used a really thick gauge wire since that is what i had laying around.

Suggestion
If correct or there is a different method, can I assume this doesn't change the lighting option (attaching/tapping the two outer spades to another switch's light spades?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It worked great on the bench but once it was tucked behind the dash with all the other electronic stuff, it was kind of unreliable.
Just did the mod and have it installed works fine...
Question how do you tap into the power on the window buttons so you can get the garage button to lite up?
The existing Porsche connector (one white and one black) leaves little room to slide anything in there on the two end posts of the window switch...any suggestions?
ItzKirb said he was going to do it...but I haven't heard or seen anything about about it ...
Thx
Jim
Darrin...
What kind of garage door opener do you have?
The prep takes about a half an hour for soldering the wire leads to the board and about 15 minutes to install...
If you do the mod make sure you mask off the traces on the board before you solder. I didn't take any soldering classes in law skool so I'm not real good but I did get it done...also make sure that before you put the board into the center console to install a new battery and cover the board with a good cloth tape...like gaffer's tape...thus, preventing any possibility of shorting if the board touches metal.
Right now I don't have any power going to the switch for the light because I don't want to cut and splice into the line...so, I'm still trying to figure a way to bring the power to the new switch from another location.
I have the part number for the switch...the one that Kirb referenced for the Targa is a matte finish. Its not available in gloss finish like we have in our cars...so I used another one...Its $33.00 at Sunset.
If you need any help let me know...

Jim,
My car had an ashtray light that I disconnected when I removed the ashtray. If yours had one that connector should be powered whenever the car is on.
Always glad when my DIY can help someone out. All i Did to light the switch up was jam wire into the back of the Power Window switch and then taped it up. I know it's not very professional, but no one sees it and it works.
OK...there is the window switch and the connector to the window switch (one black one white)...
Am I understanding you correctly then that you took a wire and attached it to the window switch posts on both sides of the window switch and not into or onto the connector which brings power to the window switch?
BTW what gage wire did you use to bring power back to the G/door switch from the window switch?
Thx...
Good mod...
Jim
If you look on the back of the connectors to the window switch you can see some room for a wire to slide in. I just took the right outer post of the Garage Door switch and taped it into the right outer post of the Window switch conncetor...did the same with the left outer switch.
I used a really thick gauge wire since that is what i had laying around. You can use a thin wire I assume since the factory wires are pretty thin.
Hope that helps?
For all you pre 2002 owners, you can just spray the matte switch with a few coats of clear. It's been almost a year now and it still looks like all the other switches.
Genie.
I think I will wire power to it too. It is 12 volt. I will de-solder the battery prongs shown at the bottom circuit board. Then after all appropriate soldering spray both sides with conformal spray, masking off the transmitter.
Which switch did you use if not the matte one? I guess I could do what Tom suggested and spray it with clear.

At least the targa switch kinda sorta looks like a garage door. plus it's a two way switch so you can use one way for the garage door and the other for something else. I did this on a friends C4 to open his garage and his entry gate.
I use my targa switch to control two separate garage doors . . . one per side. Is it still possible to make it light up if you are using both sides? Mine is not illuminated right now . . .
Hi TD
I got the switch to light up. Tapped into the window power with no splicing but a nice clean wrap...looks neat.
One thing I noticed is the fact that the range the garage door works now is cut in half. The board sitting down in the console area does shield the antenna a bit...but it works very well...
Once again...thx to Kirb for for the idea and directions.
Down in the thread there is the comment that you can use the one switch (the 996 613 119 10 A05?) to control two different garage door openers.
Can someone post/confirm the wiring method to do so (I see the diagrams for one door, but unless I've missed a post don't see how to hook up the second one).
Guess (?): Use the horizontal spade as a common point for one wire from each of the openers and attach the the remaining wires separately to each of the middle vertical spades ? If so, does it matter which wires from the opener go to the common spade?
If correct or there is a different method, can I assume this doesn't change the lighting option (attaching/tapping the two outer spades to another switch's light spades?
I got one of these and stuck it to the top of the cubby with double sided tape. Drilled a hole through the back and hooked the two wires to the phone plug. I never have to change the battery and it works for three doors.

resurrecting this OLD thread because Im planning on updating my radio next year and would love to also install a garage door (targa button) upgrade.
I keep seeing reference to Kirbys awesome write up, but seems to no longer be available online.
Did anyone ever figure out an off the shelf aftermarket solution? I am NOT very handy I have seen some old references to pre-assembled eBay products, which sound perfect for me, but maybe now a thing of the past.
Can anyone share Kirbys write-up, or any other good write-up with detailed pics?
Would also love to hear about any simplified or off the shelf solutions.
thanks,
thanks, thats a useful write up!
I was hoping to find one for a permanent, powdered solution. I.e. how to connect the garage opening circuit board to a power source.
You'd need to add a DC-DC converter to lower the voltage to whatever matches the battery the opener uses.
The bonus of using a battery is the switch works whether the car is on or not, battery connected or not, etc.
I liked the idea of this mod but I also wanted something that was permanent without having to hassle with replacing the remote battery. I hard wired the remote to connect to the always powered cigarette lighter. It worked great on the bench but once it was tucked behind the dash with all the other electronic stuff, it was kind of unreliable. I've since moved to a place with a much more modern garage door opener so I think I'm going to give it another try.
A little bit more info here:
Hard wired remote
A few dumb questions.
1 - why does it have to be connected to an always on circuit. If I remove the battery on my garage door opener l dont think I have to reset the device.
2 - Ive read other people connecting the device to the phone input/circuit. Would that work? I use the cigarette lighter to charge my phone..
3 - Im thinking of doing this along with replacing my radio. Is there a way to connect the garage door opening to the radio? Maybe usb output?
