I didn't see an adjusting nut, but I'm guessing it's under the rubber boot.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2003 Targa Tip...both front calipers are dragging/sticking. Noticed when driving, brake pedal got real hard and very sensitive. More than an inch or so of travel would lock the tires and skid - it also took quite a bit of accelerator to move. Thought it was old fluid so completed a flush and it still does it. What's really weird is it will do it when the engine is off as well. Car is up in the air, press the pedal and the two fronts barely spin. The pedal does return to normal position, but if I pull up on it (there's maybe a millimeter of upward movement), it does the release the fronts (rears are fine). From my searches, the 996 C2 doesn't have a proportioning valve, so no clue as to why only the fronts stick. Any ideas? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Are you running (reinforced) rubber brake hoses or aftermarket braided ones? If the former then it could be that they're swollen towards the inside thereby reducing the cross section of the hose so much that they're basically acting like a oneway valve: you can push brake fluid through them by pressing the brake pedal but the fluid cannot flow back to the Reservoir once you release the brake pedal. Other cause could be a faulty master cilinder or a pair of brake calipers that desperately need a rebuild. ETA: having re-read your description I'd first check the master cilinder and its adjustment (between brake pedal and master cilinder pushrod) in particular.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the assist...I'm running the stock rubber lines. They're not that old according to the service history, but I'm ordering some replacements anyway. For the master cylinder pushrod, is that done on the MC itself or above the pedal? I didn't see an adjusting nut, but I'm guessing it's under the rubber boot. Also, is it common for it to become "unadjusted". Thanks again!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Finally fixed this problem, so figured I'd update: After replacing the rubber lines and MC (with what seemed 174 bleeds in between), problem was still present and actually got worse - all 4 wheels were dragging by the end and would get progressively worse as it heat up. Pulling up on the pedal would release them...until finally even that wouldn't work anymore. Replaced the booster and so far, so good! Brake pedal is back to it's normal springy self. It also seemed to fix a vac leak I was having as well, so I'm guessing the diaphragm was in pretty bad shape.
