Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used a paper clip to unlock the pins, and gently tugged the wires out of their connectors.
Leading evidence: 'Use paper clip' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair headlight wiring' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I was able to repair my headlight wiring using electrical tape.

Another easy solution would be to use liquid electrical tape on these cables.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The low beam bulb failed and there is no longer continuity in the low beam internal headlight wires. Are the two failures related? The wiring insulation is in poor conditions especially in the area where a supporting tie-wrap is. But I would assume that the insulation is still working or there would be short circuit every time I turn the headlights on. The fuse is still good. I am thinking that the issue is at the multiple pin electrical connector between the headlight and the car. Any comments/suggestions?
There is a company that offers a rebuild/rewire service for about 1k -

Or you can ebay some of the aftermarket full swap light kits now available - or you can try to fix them on your own with electrical tape or liquid electrical tape
PPPPPPS , there are also some decent YouTube videos on disassembling the lights (it is possible). The wiring loom isn't that complicated if you have some basic soldering skills and some patience to take the lights apart...
authorborne,
Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I was able to repair my headlight wiring using electrical tape. I don't know for how long it will last, but it is working now.
Another easy solution would be to use liquid electrical tape on these cables. A lot of German cars of that decade have the same problems.

EDIT: just saw your reply above....
I de-pinned the connectors and applied heat shrink tubing onto the bare wires. It must be working well because I havent experienced any faults since I did this 6 months ago.
which connectors did you de pin and how? The main connector to the vehicle wiring harness seems not accessible unless you pull the headlight apart? Inquiring minds want to know!
I didnt depin the main connector, but I did for all the other connectors. I used a paper clip to unlock the pins, and gently tugged the wires out of their connectors.
The headlamps I worked on were the Xenon models.

Hi there!
I actually build replacement harnesses for the 996.1 headlights.
I also offer installation as well as upgrades using the Retrofitlab projector kit (bi-LED or bi-Xenon).
If you want to replace the harness yourself, I am just finishing a very detailed step-by-step how-to video of opening the light and everything else, that will be included with the harness purchase.
