I initially interpreted it as a chunked cat, and purchased and installed cat bypass pipes, only to learn that the issue is with the muffler.
Leading evidence: 'muffler' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'muffler' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install cat bypass pipes, only' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. I will post a comparison with one of each installed while the rattle one is getting surgery.

These are my Second Set of Tubi's, first one was already replaced under warranty when they have Lifetime Warranty, now only 2 Years

So, rather than spending $1000 on new Tubis, or a couple hundred bucks on a set of used factory mufflers, I posted a "want to trade my one good and one bad Tubi for your used stock mufflers" thread, and another enterprising RLer took me up on it.

My first (failed) attempt to resolve the rattle cost me the price of a used set of cat bypass pipes, two 02 sensors (I don't want to talk about it), and a complete set of plugs and coil packs (because it would be stupid to replace the hardest one on the passenger side and not do the other five).

PP, I will hack them (or get them hacked depending on how adventurous I'm feeling with the welder) - but I needed the car up and running ASAP, and I also wanted to get the Tubis out to the gent who shipped me his stockers.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Another RLer was cool enough to swap his stock mufflers for my Tubi mufflers, one of which has a rattle but appears to be serviceable.
Last night, I finshed the swap job - getting the Tubi cans off and shoving the factory mufflers up into the fenders. For a job that only requires 3 nuts (for each muffler) and two more to loosen the cat clamp, it's a project. I can only imagine how much more it would suck in a rusty climate.
How it sounds: My 911 now sounds like...a car. Not a race car, not even a fast car - just...a car.
I'm gonna miss those mufflers. If you're on the fence, go for the Tubi mufflers. They are definitely loud, but it's an awesome loud. They shout, "You! In the Taurus! Point me by!"
I think stock mufflers sounds great when you 'mean business' and get 5000 revs onwards. I don't think I would like to hear that 'growl' all the time. Small doses of anything is better for you lol. Just saying...
Personally, I didn't think my Tubi's were loud and I've run muffler bypass before and think those are loud for sure. However when you do get on it past 4k, I've been told by my wife that she can hear my car from a block and a half away when she walks the dogs.
I make a point of taking it easy going up and down my cul de sac when I have to go out late at night or early in the morning - even so, a neighbor from the far end of my street asked me the other day what I do for a living, since they hear my car coming and going at all hours.
I think he was hoping I was a surgeon or a drug dealer, and not just a guy with servers that sometimes need attention at odd hours.
Thus, I realized that the Tubi's were louder than I thought.
I believe my car has the stock exhaust and Fabspeed tips....I have to say that I LOVE the sound of the exhaust. I could go 80 on the highway with the cruise on and have basically no noise in the cabin from the exhaust, but as soon as I down shifted my 6th or gave it a bunch of throttle the engine would just HOWL. And as it goes up the RPM range, the amount of resonance noise and how it changes with the engine RPM is very cool!
PP, I will hack them (or get them hacked depending on how adventurous I'm feeling with the welder) - but I needed the car up and running ASAP, and I also wanted to get the Tubis out to the gent who shipped me his stockers. He was kind enough to send them out basically with nothing but my word that I would actually send him something back, and I've already taken too long to get them swapped out...
I think I'd spring for the Quick Time Performance electric cutouts, but that's certainly some creative use of the Home Depot plumbing section! I looked it up because I was curious and I was surprised to see that Teflon tape is good up to 500 degrees!
doesnt make sense to me ? you say the fellow rennlister was willing to swap the stock mufflers for the tubi,s sounds like a no brainer for him and very generous on your part. i have the tubi's and as you know they are very $$$ that being sed,to remove these and put stock ones back, and then consider a hack( gundo, fister etc)i dont get it ???. my tubi's are coupled with 200 cell sport cats and headers, and still the system is not loud, especially under normal driving conditions, when the revs increase of course so does the volume, they will also last longer then factory mufflers, and imo they have a fantastic sound, now of course if you sold them and got some decent return on your investment than thats fine, and if you are returning the car back to stock for whatever reason thats ok to.but to start cutting, welding, etc the stock mufflers doesnt make sense to me, funny on these forums i read about the fister and gundo hacks to the mufflers all the time and i understand its cheaper $wise then a factory pse system and aftermarket exhaust (tubi, cargraphic etc) yet ive never met a fellow 996 owner with that mod? anyway its all good, and its fun to play with the car no doubt....good luck..and nice car.......p.s.did i read correctly that you heard a rattle from one of your tubis? or a rattle on one of the stock mufflers?
One of the Tubis has an internal baffle that's loose, and it has a very noticeable rattle. I initially interpreted it as a chunked cat, and purchased and installed cat bypass pipes, only to learn that the issue is with the muffler. So, I had to remove the cat bypass pipes, reinstall the cats, and (probably due to the additional heat from the bypass pipes) wound up killing one of my coil packs. My first (failed) attempt to resolve the rattle cost me the price of a used set of cat bypass pipes, two 02 sensors (I don't want to talk about it), and a complete set of plugs and coil packs (because it would be stupid to replace the hardest one on the passenger side and not do the other five).

I'm tired of having a rattly 911, I'm done spending money on this particular project, and I don't have the time right now to keep pulling the Tubi off, work on it, reinstall it to see if the rattle is gone, ad infinitum.
I believe the Tubi is reparable, but I'm done dicking around with it. As of right now, I have a decent set of used mufflers, no rattle, and when time permits, I'll hack 'em.
I'm just curious as to "how loud is loud" (re: tubis)? I've got Fabspeed Maxflow mufflers on mine (it came that way)...whats the difference in sound? FWIW, the Maxflows sound "like a sports-car should" to me...not a race-car though.
This. But the timbre is a bit different between those. IMO, the Tubi's sound more 80's-90's higher pitch, more crisp, F1ish towards the upper end compared to the deeper and lower rumble of the Fabspeeds.
You are welcome!
And I am looking forward to hearing the difference between the tubi's and my mille miglia's.
The mille's have a lower growl and are loud. The tubi's should have as previously stated, a higher pitch. I will post a comparison with one of each installed while the rattle one is getting surgery.
Paul
Hey Paul,
How did this Surgery go? My Tubi also Cracked and developed an Internal Rattle, I swapped them out for my Stock Hacked Mufflers yesterday and Oh Boy I miss the Tubi Already!
These are my Second Set of Tubi's, first one was already replaced under warranty when they have Lifetime Warranty, now only 2 Years
Any Details on the Surgery? I gave them to my friend who is a Fabricator as a Winter Project to have them ready for summer time
Let me know any details if possible
If my buddy cant fix them, ill be dropping $2450.00 on my 3rd Set of Tubi's
The surgery went well. One of the baffles was broken, one of the internal brackets was cracked, and when you look at the before photo, there were stress fractures/cracks around both the inlet and outlet pipes mounting plate. The welder did a window cut to the muffler and welded everything back in place, and welded up the fractures. As a side note, I had to do the same on my Mille Miglias. But only the outlet pipes on the Mille's cracked away and did not fracture on the mounting plate. He told me in both cases, it has to do with the high temperatures and the wall thickness of the stainless that causes potential issues.
Sorry if the photos are too large.
He was able to do one muffler in an evening, after hours in his own home shop (less than 2 hours). It's a friend/freebie deal, but said it wasn't difficult, just patience putting the cutout window back in so there would not be warping or distortion. I wasn't concerned about that because it would be out of view and cut open anyway. But, it was a pride/professional thing and I appreciated it. The welds he did are actually stronger than the originals.
Bottom line is that cutting it open and making the repairs is the easy part, putting the window back in and welding the in/out pipes are where the hard patient detail work come into play.
I had not noticed until now the extensive use of Teflon tape in the "manual" version. Teflon tape usually comes in water and natural gas thicknesses...I wonder which one is most appropriate for exhaust?
