This morning I checked all of the settings on the console control, I managed to get the purple spindle in the foot well to move twice.

I took everything apart near the battery, got the door removed, cleaned & taped up.

Checking closer it appears that the bottom of the (where the flapper door should stick in) is pushed out.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im into the vent & placed the silver AC tape over the door on my left. It moves and works well. The other door in the far back does not appear to move although the foam is in tact (covers the holes). I tried but cant reach the ones off to the left. I was just going to reinforce over the foam.
Should that door move??
I can accept that but. To be sure, my observations the one straight in does not move?
i just checked again. The control buttons dont function good. It difficult to reason them. The back one does move some at times but no way can I remove the foam & put tape on it.
thinking Ill need to go through the hood compartment.😳
Hey All,
Not intending on hyjacking your thread but Im wondering what it would take, i.e., how involved it would be to dissassemble the dash/HVAC & radio controls to access and remove the plenum?
Im thinking removal would allow for completely splitting the plenum to allow access to the mode/blend doors?
Ive seen folks remove the radio and cut an access hole in the plenum. This seems like it would be really difficult, especially with large hands. Seems like a knuckle buster for sure.
My 03 seems like its still functioning fairly well, but I did have a small piece of foam come out of one vent. Eventually,
I suppose a full on replacement of the plenum is also an option, though I havent priced nor investigated.
Upper plastic bearing,
Ive been working on the car for at least 6 hours. Its cold windy & Im too stiff to continue with it for a while. I took everything apart near the battery, got the door removed, cleaned & taped up. I spent the past 2 hours attempting to get the door back in. The problem I have seems to be at the bottom. It wont slip into into what I think actually moves the door??
Then I tried to replace the upper (Ill call it a plastic bearing) the plastic I cut off. Now it wont go back in.
would love some good advice!
The pivot at the bottom is just like the one that you sawed the top off of. I assume you unscrewed the bottom pivot point to get the door out - I found it helpful to screw the bottom pivot back together before reinserting the door so that you had something firm to push it against.
I was not sure which screw / nut
( I do appreciate your help. I wanted to get it completed today before the arctic weather hits tonight. 🥶🥶
was connected. I manipulated the door & got it removed relatively easy. I can push the bottom pivot in like its spring loaded. Thats where I cant get the door in correctly. Also that is the one that turns it from the controller beneath!
The bottom pivot has a slot in it just like the top one. You need to find a way to keep pressure/tension on it (from the inside of the car) so that you can push the door down into the slot.
just wanted to say with much effort I accomplished the task. I tested the setting & the flapper moves back & forth & the air changes to where its supposed to go but, the buttons make no sense to me.I need to learn how they function??
I still cant figure what the larger flapper does not move like the smaller one does, or does it move when the other is closed & I cant see it?
The larger flapper and the smaller flapper are the two sides (long and short) of the same flapper - they move together around the pivot point.
Unless you're talking about the
other
flapper. The one you removed controls temperature (more open pushes more air through the heater core, more closed diverts more fresh air into the system).
The
other
one (which you access going through the radio) controls which vent(s) the air comes out of (windshield, dash, footwell).
[img alt="I dont know or understand how the flapper works. If one piece moves how can it move on my left but never move the one in the back (it has several rows of holes.in it). Changing the temperature setting does not move it either.

Is it possible that I put the valve (flapper) in wrong?"]https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlist.com-vbulletin/2000x1504/img_4808_2978a27a46aa495b7b38c3596595c3c9ce1b114e.jpeg[/img]

The flapper with the oval holes is controls
where
the air goes; the flapper with the round holes controls hot/cold. The
round
hole door pivots off the purple pivot point as you change temperature in the AC head unit. The oval door pivots when you change vent selection in the head unit.
I appreciate your help. Im closing things up as they are. All of the vents & defrost ports work. I have the radio back in so finishing up under the frunk!
I am sad to say, after putting it all back together I have to heat. The motor is heated and the in\out heater hose are warm so the heat element is getting warm water. That tells me the larger flapper is not opening, correct? So again I ask how can the one that directs airflow move without the other move? Well I should be pretty good at doing this job now again, well of course after I figure out why it was not voving!
If you read my thread you know this was a hard & time consuming job for me. I want to figure out how to possibly fix it without reming everything again. So the blender door does not open allowing heat through? Yet the other door moves & directs air to the vent, defrost & floor. I seriously believe the blender door is in the correct position but its just not moving. Looking for opinions on what I can do. Im considering removing the screw from the bottom to see if I can rotate it from there. I should also be able to verify that the actuator is moving once it is disconnected. ???
Each door has a seperate motor to move it. You have either disconnected the inner door motor or broken the motor by moving the door by hand. The motors are under the dash. I think the one for the inner door is on the passenger's side above the center tunnel.
Try searching ebay for 996 heater box to find pictures of it out of the car.
This morning I checked all of the settings on the console control, I managed to get the purple spindle in the foot well to move twice. Checking closer it appears that the bottom of the (where the flapper door should stick in) is pushed out. It is no longer inside. I can't get to it. Do I need to remove the side panel with the carpet that is below it? Do I just pull that panel off? I never got any heat to come out of the vents but I did feel heat with my fingers while pushing the lever around.
Is this a cabriolet with BOSE?
If yes, you absolutely have to remove the subwoofer in the footwell to get access to the pivot points - it's tricky to remove, I can send some pictures if helpful.
I have no idea how you got as far as you have without pulling that box out...
Im just hard headed I suppose 🤪 any help is appreciated! Yes the subwoofer is there.
I almost got that side panel off but its attached at the rear lower area.. looking for instructions, thanks!
You have to take the subwoofer out - there is a screw up near the front that is obvious, but you need to pull the carpet back near the console to get access to the second screw. Access to those lower pivots is 1000x easier with the subwoofer out.
It rough laying on that door jam so long but I got the motor out. Im not sure if I can test it but it did not move today but it did twice yesterday! Which buttons would make it move? High heat temperature & otherwise any vent selection?
The temperature control moves that motor, but there is definitely some algorithm that it goes through based on ambient temp in the cabin. If you move it all the way to Hi or Lo it will move the motor.
Ive been moving along with the flapper & the flapper (blender motor). I did post something but I cant find that thread. At this point I have the motor & it works. I have the blender / flapper back in the heater box but Id like to verify that it fits at the bottom correctly (where it pivots). The photo shows the pivot point is not completely inside of the hole ( the hole that goes through to the motor). ???
if someone can verify Ill move on to my next problem.😅
Oh, Merry Christmas 🎄
Question, are the upper & lower spindles the same size, length & width? I lost the upper spindle while trying to replace it. I ordered a new one from China so Im waiting on it. It appears to be for the bottom motor since it has a screw hole in it.
I have my old one from the bottom available so Ive been trying to push it down into the flapper at the top. It wont fit. So Ive been shaving it down (making the width smaller). I finally got it in & on the flapper but it does not go all the way down inside of the hole. I can see the flapper moving up & down as I push in or pull it up & it does turn the flapper, so I think it is in the correct position.
I cant drive my Porsche with everything out up front & Im missing that😳.
The new spindle is for a VW so I hope it fits!
Hopefully it will be here next week!
So happy to finally get the spendle in today. It snapped into the bottom perfectly. I removed it for now until I get my son to assist me with the job.
Im asking advice on how to proceed.
put the upper spindle in (which came from the bottom because I lost the original upper one). I had to shave it down in diameter because it would not fit. I also lost the cap. Does it need a cap? Like what does the cap do? Im afraid the spindle might come out after some time!!
Process, snap the spindle in the top to the blender, close the door as in AC position, have someone hold it in position at the top while I snap the bottom spindle to the blender door. Connect the electric motor to the power wire. Then connect the battery, turn ignition on, turn on AC to cold so the motor will position itself to close the flapper. Then connect the lower spindle to the motor arm???
advice??
I think the only reason you "need" a cap on the top spindle is to prevent debris from falling into the spindle/mechanism. Most people have covered the top with some duct seal putty and called it a day.
Yes thanks but the original top spindle was lost so Im using a bottom one in the top. Its too large to put a cap on it, it has to turn.
maybe I should cut it in half?
my son helped me tonight, I got the spendles snapped in place. With luck Ill get it all together tomorrow!
Good afternoon, I have the top spendle cut in half, it went down into position easily. I put tape over it. The blender turns (by hand correctly). I am trying to connect the motor from the footwell to the lower spendle. Does anyone have a picture of how it is positioned in any particular position? I cold position should work. Thanks!
