Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Test brandon mentioned this might be his' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Test brandon mentioned this might be his' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Wanted to share a recent
996.1 M96
build we just finished up and road tested.
This one started as a
3.4L 5-chain engine
and was developed into a
3.9L
over a couple years of refinement, with a very specific goal in mind:
addressing the mid-range power gap these engines are known for
, without sacrificing reliability or the analog feel of the early cars.
Build overview
Bore increased to
102.7mm
, stock 3.4L crank/stroke retained
Full teardown, inspection, and measurement
Cylinder heads ported with a custom intake port profile
Exhaust ports cleaned up and flow-bench verified
Upgraded intake valves with upgraded seats
Upgraded valve springs
Custom intake camshaft profile matched to displacement
Intake runners reshaped and ported
Lightweight flywheel and supporting reliability upgrades
The intent wasnt chasing a headline dyno number but improving
how the car drives in the real world
.
Dyno results
The engine produced
379 HP and 322 TQ
, which is roughly ~50 HP higher than what we typically see from comparable 5-chain builds. Solid numbers, but not the main takeaway.
On-road impressions
Where this setup really stood out was on the road. Below ~3k RPM its smooth and easy to live with, but once you roll into it past that point the mid-range is noticeably stronger. Throttle response is immediate and it continues to pull cleanly up top without feeling peaky or strained.
During the drive test, Brandon mentioned this might be his
favorite M96 build so far
not just because of the power, but because of how
right
it feels. The smiles (and a few outright giggles) during the drive were a pretty good indicator that the combination worked while still keeping that analog 996 character intact.
Why this combo worked
Keeping the stock stroke preserved the rev character, while displacement and head work did the heavy lifting where the factory engines tend to fall flat. The result is a flatter, more usable torque curve without turning the car into something its not.

Watched the video yesterday as well. Been following Slakker since you guys started posting content online and I gotta say youre a breath of fresh air. Not just the quality of the content and transparency but the enthusiasm and passion you bring. Keep it up! Exciting time to be a 996 owner.
Regardless of what’s under the cover, that car is a super model. I’d end up parking it in the garage and just stare it with a stupid, drooling grin on my mug.
I love that you are doing this for our cars. I have been in love with mine for over 20 years. 996.2 GT3 power in my cable throttle 996 would be amazing. $30k seems reasonable. Thank you.
