Sounds like you should check the drain plugs before you leave.

Check weather at Arcata and then cut over to Redding and Interstate 5.

You can check the weather forecasts but it probably will be fine.

While the odds are slim of you running into a slide that has happened and even slimmer your car gets caught in the middle a slide can block your way and you then have to backtrack or wait for the road to be cleared.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, I have recently put a deposit down on a 996 and am planning to drive it back home to the Bay Area. Does anyone have any recommendations on best route to use given the season, or is it just ill-advised all around?
Thanks!
Basically going to do the drive over 2 days, stopping in Eugene to see my wife's birthplace, then down the coast to Eureka. Day 2 we will finish the drive down the coast to San Jose.
Thanks all for the feedback!
Portland down the coast to Arcata / Humbolt. Check weather at Arcata and then cut over to Redding and Interstate 5. You can over night in Redding or Humbolt. Just judge your time and weather. The coast drive is great ! As mentioned above you can also go down the coast even further.
US 1 down the Oregon coast is one of the classic drives in the US. It is great in the summer if you are not in too much of a hurry. This time of year it will be rainy every day but maybe that is good as well. No crowds!
Portland just had a big ice storm but that is cleared up and unusual. I5 straight down would be the fastest route. The only spot that might be cold is around Grants Pass in southern Oregon. You can check the weather forecasts but it probably will be fine.
Check the tires on the new car. They probably are summer tires and not all-season. If so, be conservative when the temperatures approach freezing. Years ago, I had summer tires on a 944 Turbo for two Connecticut winters and made it ok with a bit of caution.
Enjoy your trip and the new car. Tell us how you made out.
Here is my wife and car last fall on US 1.
My inclination would be to pick the most direct route home. The car is "new" to you. I prefer to shake out a "new" car close to home just in case. Only once I have become comfortable with the car then do I take it on a nice pleasure road trip. (Bought my used 996 Turbo in the middle of June 2009. My first real pleasure trip of any real distance was not until the July 4th holiday. In the meantime I had changed the oil/filter, had the car aligned, and just spent some time getting to know the car.)
The weather could be a factor and with summer tires sticking to the main highway will have any snow/ice dealt with sooner than secondary/scenic roads way out in the middle of nowhere.
Regardless of which way you drive, watch your speed. Freeway speed is limited to 65mph (IIRC) in Oregon. I'm sure secondary roads have an even lower speed limit. While it is higher in places in CA you can get pulled over just as quick in CA as you can in OR.
In OR you can't pump your own fuel. The few times I've had to fuel up my cars the pump jocky makes a mess of the car by overfilling the tank. Thus what I try to do when I have to drive in OR I arrange to drive straight through on one tank of gasoline.
Going north I fill up close to the CA/OR border and then I don't fill up again until I cross over into WA. This pretty much requires I stay on I-5 the whole way up or down when going through OR.
I do I5 to California twice a year and you absolutely have to wait for high pressure and clear weather this time of the year to cross the Siskyous because if its raining in Medford its snowing in the passes. If it's not perfect weather they sand and salt the roads

That doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me.
So if the better/safer option is to make it out to the coast and go 101 South, would it make sense to cut over from Eugene?
Coast roads, any roads (even the freeway), have the risk of snow/ice or heavy rain with the risk of land/mud slides and coast roads are the worst. While the odds are slim of you running into a slide that has happened and even slimmer your car gets caught in the middle a slide can block your way and you then have to backtrack or wait for the road to be cleared.
Don't know when you plan to leave Portland but here in the SF bay area a big rain storm is due in Wednesday with rain -- heavy at times -- continuing all through the week.
Just an add on down the coast , rain yes ... snow very rare. Ocean Temp usually blocks chances of snow. This time of year , duh , there is going to be some if not more weather. Oregon to Arcata is a great coast route, Seashore , Redwoods et al. Pics ,gray or sunny great. Been there done it. All that said, you are now a Porsche driver and above the age of 21 , experience this great car and enjoy life , come what may. Looking forward to the pictures.
Sounds like you should check the drain plugs before you leave. On a side note, I got spend some time near Alice's Restaurant this past holiday season, so envious - you guys have some gorgeous and relatively empty roads over there.
As a precaution, bring some food, water and sleeping bags in case you get stuck along the way and have to spend some considerable time stranded in the car. And refill when you hit a half tank remaining - you might not find fuel available when you need it, otherwise.
As a veteran of countless trips over the Siskiyous, going from Los Angeles to Newport, Oregon on the coast, I'd recommend keeping to I-5. It is not uncommon for Hwy 1 to be closed at some point, and you may have to backtrack mightily to get around the road closure. In non-winter weather, Hwy 1 can be fun, but you're likely to get stuck behind larger vehicles, and only be able to go 35 - 40 MPH at this time of year.
If you stick to I-5, time your passage between Grants Pass, OR and Redding, CA to occur at the warmest part of the day.
Pick it up in San Jose and head into the city. PCH up across the Golden Gate, along the coast then hit the 5 from there. The I5 stretch through Shasta is also pretty amazing.

Congrats on the new ride! Beautiful photos of a great looking car! Enjoy the trip, but please reconsider staying in Eureka. It's not the greatest town to stand-out in in a P-car. Just a few minutes south in Fortuna on the west side of the 101 are a couple of decent hotels. The Best Western is clean and quiet and just off the 101, and you'll be within walking distance to Eel River Brewery. But if you want a better dinner, Larupin in Trinidad (north of Fortuna) is worth the stop before you get to your hotel. Or... drive the extra hour or so past Eureka and stay at the Benbow Inn. They have good food too, or there's Cecil's (Cajun) in Garberville about 5 mins to the north, but don't stay at a hotel in Garberville. And although the 299 and 36 are fun roads to the 5, I'd do the coast and stay away from crossing either one right now. You can also stay on the 101 from there end enjoy more redwoods before heading west again to the 1 to finish out your drive. Just my .02
Have fun!
Thanks for all the good tips. We actually ended up spending more time than planned in Eugene on Saturday, so we ended up staying the night in Gold Beach, OR. I agree that Eureka was probably not the best choice for staying the night. That said, the car stood out no matter where we stopped, until we got to Santa Rosa, at which time it was just another Porsche!
Lovely drive, especially through the Redwoods.
Another Bay Area new 996 owner here well, almost new, I'll settle payment tomorrow then get it shipped from Georgia. Anyway, I've driven from here to Portland and back. Like others have mentioned, Highway 1 is the way to go (if you're in no particular hurry). Good luck!
Yes to all those but double yes to this one. Do not speed 10 miles before and 10 miles after the OR/CA border. Before and after you are on your own. In the red zone you are 90% certain of a special invitation if you speed. This especially in an exotic and double special if it has new car plates. The CHP guy that let me off the hook cuz he was PCA told me about the running contest between Or and Ca cops and the locker room antics and bets that revolve around it. And don't think your RD will help. The coffee shop at the top of the hill is a favorite for observe and pursue.
