POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry for asking guys, just trying to get as many helpful guys as possible to give me a better idea with price ranges and experience. Rear bumper got impacted less than 10mph. Minimal damage. Probably would have to repair or replace both bumperettes. web like cracking on paint. I got a quote close to $2000 for repair and repaint. Does that sound pretty high?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Besides both bumperettes having the obvious indents and scrapes/scratches (which mostly will just be replaced since bumperettes are $132 each) theres visually little to no damage on the bumper. Kind of why i didn't post a pic to avoid getting flamed. theres spider web like paint cracking above where the license plate would be and a long skinny line indent in between both exhaust tail pipes. if I post a pic everyone would say they can barely notice anything from the pic. with that said, there would be very little repair work on the bumper, but I do know that they will have to sand it back down and repaint and blend to panels. so is 2k pretty steep or just about right?

POST 4Original post

I have 2 small scrapes and a 2 inch slightest of dent and scrape on my car. 3 in all. One on the rear bumper where the garage door caught it as the car was not far enough into the garage as the door closed and stopped short on contact. Another as though keys on a belt caught near the petrol cap door (hardly visible). The 3rd on the top (slight dent) rear passenger fender showing an inch of undercoat. I thought all could be repaired at about $500 tops but was amazed when I was quoted over $2000 for all three. I told the repair shop that I could live with the scrapes at that price. You have to be 2 foot from the car to see the one near the fuel door(no dent). I have the bumper one covered with a small Porsche sticker (no dent). I have only had one garage estimate the cost of repair.

POST 5Original post

If you're handy it's not hard to remove the bumper it's literally only a few screws. Removing it and taking it to the repairer should save you a fair bit. There are videos on youtube on how to remove it.

POST 6Original post

Not sure how close your porsche dealer is, but if you can find out who does the repairs for the used car dept, they are usually better priced and well practised in color matching. We provide this service here(Atlanta) to both and on average are one third the cost.

POST 7Original post

It's not that it's a particularly difficult repair, but it is time intensive and since it's a plastic (polyurethane) part, they've got to add flex agent to the paint etc. Even though it won't take a lot of paint for the repair, you pay for at least a quart (if not more) of paint, a quart of clear, flex agent etc...Then add labor + Porsche tax = Big bill !!! $2K still seems awfully high for a bumper...As mentioned above, if you just bring them the bumper cover it'll save you money... you've just got to hope it matches (well) when you put it back on. Good Luck

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 13914381

Had my bumper repainted by a well known shop in my area. The bumper has scratches, chips, etc. The total cost... $300.00 Here's the thing, I saved a lot of money by removing the bumper myself. The paint shop computer matched the paint to the Porsche paint code, lightly sanded, & painted. The bumper looks brand new.

POST 9Original post

The last time our's was replaced it was exactly like the OP described. I was quoted $2500 and it actually turned out to be $3500. I've known my shop for 20 years now and trust him, but still asked WTF?!?! What he said was that when it was removed we were going to find the plastic had flexed which stresses and damages the plastic (even if there is no dent after the fact) which causes it to not hold paint well (basically the paint is going to eventually fail and flake off). It was the other driver's insurance so I wasn't going to save her money by arguing it. Sure enough when he pulled the bumper the plastic where it took the hit was discolored and the insurance approved replacing the whole bumper skin. Like the OP it was the bumper-ette that took the brunt and if ours were the painted variety it probably could have been wiped clean...

POST 11Original post

I am picking up my car tomorrow from a local goos bodyshop. Tey redid nthe bumber and the right front quarter panel. Both were damaged when I bought the car. Cost for all including NJ tax is $1400. Figure about $400 for the quarter panel so I'm thinking the bumper cost around $1000. Everyone here is right with the need for flexible primer and paint. There is also the fact that painting is tough and an art.

POST 12Original post

alot of experience with various front bumpers. rock chips, scraped bottom. usually retail body shop cost about 1000 to make like new

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 13914813

The OP is talking about the rear bumper. Oddly (to me anyway) the rear bumper is more expensive that the front. Seems like with the openings and extra contours that the front should be more expensive...

POST 14Original post

If the old bumper is being reused then $2,000 seems crazy high to me. However, I could easily see paying $800-$1000 for a repaint if the shop does it the "right way." I had the hood of my 996 repainted for $650 done by a true professional with a 5 year guarantee. $2,000 sounds like the price for a new bumper with paint. But again, if they are reusing the original part and there is almost no visible damage $2,000 seems very very high even for Hawaii. YMMV

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 13914690

Can you share who that shop is? Might be helpful info for other members here.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone for all the responses! Really appreciate all the detail and everyone's own experiences/opinions. I need as much as possible to get the right idea of the price range I should be willing to accept I'm from Hawaii but located in California I was thinking $1000 would have been the more accurate price range if reusing the same bumper and not getting a new one

POST 17Original post

I guess the real question is for you to post the details of the written estimate. Give us that and we can tell you better if the price is fair for the quoted work. There will still be, of course, the question of how much work is actually needed.

POST 18Original post

I had some other body work done to my car (front right "wing"/quarter) and asked the shop to give me a price on fixing a spider crack on my rear bumper while it was at the shop. I was figuring something like $4-500 as the car was already at the shop, they had the materials on hand, were all set up to do the work and I offered them cash. They came back with a quote of $900 I told them not to bother. The rest of the work they did was ok (not great, not terrible - they had to re-buff a couple small spots that weren't perfect) but I certainly won't be bringing any more work to them.

POST 19Original post

Just got my car back from the shop. They did awesome and she looks new again. The color match is perfect and I am happy. Yep, good bodywork and paint is expensive but IMHO worth it.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 13915676

Said it before and I'll say it again: If you find a good bodyshop, hang onto them for dear life. A good shop can be hard to find. Over 20 years I've had some spats with my shop, but I keep ending up going back because every time I've gone elsewhere has been a mess and a half. Really no different than finding a good mechanic.

POST 21Original post

See if you have an LKQ on the island, they are in most big cities here in the states. I have an areo front bumper cover that I bought on eBay in "mint" condition. when it arived you could see it had been painted several times, lots of cracks, spiders in the paint, etc. and at least one broken tab. I had it on for a couple of years but then hit a curb/stopper with it and scratched it up pretty badly. Took it off and took it to an LKQ warehouse in our area where the recondition parts. For $150 they stripped off the paint, repaired any cracks, broken tabs and other problems and then primed it. Actually looked like new when it came back. It would required a little filling and sanding in a couple of spots before painting to be perfect. I still have it in my garage as I have never had it painted, but got quotes for $300-$500 in Ocean Blue metallic. It was a good price for the restoration and priming, one of these days I will get it painted.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 13916175

Hawaii is in California! I always get 3 estimates and try to find past customers to talk to. Now ask if anyone in your area has a shop they can recommend.

POST 23Original post

FYI, a reconditioned to Porsche specifications (whatever that means) is $1500. I think $1700 would buy a new bumper from a discount dealer.

POST 24Original post

Sounds like things are pretty well covered above. I AMA bit late to the party. Just in. Add anyone is interested in the future, I manage 7 body shops for an Insurance company, so I would be happy to give opinions if in need.

POST 29Original post

With LKQ buying a reconditioned bumper is different than having them recondition your bumper. While ot was 4-5 years ago having mine reconditioned was about $150. I dropped it off and picked it up myself.

POST 30Original post

Seems very high to me too. I had my front bumper repaired and painted for $300 (a cash deal). The bumper was cracked on one side and actually had a small piece missing. Five years later and it still looks good.

POST 31Original post

I had the rear bumper cover replaced on my 996 C4S because somebody hit it while it was parked at the airport. It had a seemingly minor depression in the bumper cover, but it required replacement. The whole thing was about $2,200. It looked perfect after the replacement.

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13919627

$2,200 with a replacement sounds good. My quote of close to $2000 was just to repair the damaged bumper

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi guys, bad update here so today i went to my car after work and noticed it wouldn't start. this was what happened to me right after the minor rear end accident at the red light where the car hit me from behind. I took my foot off the clutch and car stalled, and I couldn't start the car up. I called a tow at the scene of the accident and and they jumped my car and it was ready to go. the car has been good to drive the past week and a half. today i noticed the car didn't start after work so I called a tow to jump my car again. the car would crank and turn, but would not fire. the tow said it might be the fuel pump and might need to be replaced. Any thoughts? car has 112k miles
