Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My theory is that someone changed the bank 1 plug and then thought it was too involved and quit!

I used the same Kolbalt right angle bit ratchet that was posted above, universal joint, short extensions, ratchet, and a rubber spark plug gripper/grabber.

I know this is mostly a back-patting thread, but it would be helpful to the RL community if you share how you were able to replace these plugs without having to remove the exhaust or other obstacles along the way.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey everyone, last friday I did a slight tune-up on my 996.2 just before she turns over 60K miles. Oil and filter change, cabin and intake filters, and spark plus. I have a hunch that these are the original spark plugs that I took out and replaced. They are stamped as made in France. I'm still very new to the 996.2. Nor am I a experienced plug reader so how would you say they look? The car is running pretty strong though.
Edit: I was able to replace the spark plugs in just three hours without removing anything from the exhaust.
I did the same thing and found the same French plugs in all of my cylinders but one, the Single plug was a Bosch. My theory is that someone changed the bank 1 plug and then thought it was too involved and quit! Or maybe lost one plug and had to get a replacement. Who knows but the car only has 34K on it. Those plugs look to be showing there age.

How ironic there are French plugs on a German car given the fact that they locked up Dr. Porsche which many believe caused his health to go down the tubes. Guess it's water under the bridge ... no grudges.. moving on.
Ha!
Look forward to hearing more about this successful project. Congrats!
Think them French plugs are German.
Almost all OE-manufacturers of automobiles, commercial vehicles and engines are BERU Systems customers. For the Aftermarket, Federal-Mogul supplies all the well-known distributors and workshop operators.
The main production facilities for BERU glow plugs and ignition coils are located in Ludwigsburg, Germany.
Plugs look fine just worn.
I did the same; you have to remove the two heat shields (2 bolts each, I believe), remove the wheels, lift the car 2 feet in the air, and then spend a couple hours scraping skin off your knuckles and contorting your wrists. It is doable tho, and given the state of most exhaust bolts, worth it.
I changed plugs and coils in my 2003 C2 without removing any exhaust bits. I did have to remove the wheels and splash/heat shields though.
If I can do it with the catchers mitts I have on the end of each arm probably most anyone can.
I used these tools
The GEAR Wrench spark plug kit has the sockets attached to the swivel extensions and get to the plugs and pull them without losing the socket down the hole.

The Kobalt 24 pc right angle bit drivers get to the coil screws pretty easily.

The Harbor Freight Long Reach Hose Grip pliers enabled me to unlatch the coil connectors and also reach in to pull them back onto the new coils.

The one that needs the broadest vocabulary is #4.
I put the car on ramps, so the wheels stayed on, heat sheilds came off of course. I used the same Kolbalt right angle bit ratchet that was posted above, universal joint, short extensions, ratchet, and a rubber spark plug gripper/grabber.
I have small hands so I could get my hands in without much issues or scrapping. The COP connectors were easy by simply pushing on the clip till I heard a click then pulling them off.
Nice work, those old plugs look a little crusty, is that a crack in the insulator on the far left plug?
We sell the Bosch plugs in our ignition service kits, but we can substitute for Beru if you email us. Free shipping on all orders.

I've managed to get to them all without removing exhausts. But only by dropping the engine down on the mounts as far as I dared. But then thats no too difficult.
