Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I took it back to the retailer (Napa), they checked stock and all but one had the overly large diameter.
Leading evidence: 'Check stock and all' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I will check some Wix filters when I am at the store and see if those look like they will fit properly.

That will just put metal shavings right down the middle, which is supposed to be the 'clean' side of the filter.

Has anyone else had this issue recently or know if perhaps they changed the 1042 filter for some reason?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I went to change my oil tonight and I grabbed one of my Napa Gold 1042 filters and it would not screw on more than a quarter turn, so I looked at the old filter and noticed that it looked slightly different than the new one. I went back inside and looked at my other filters, I had 4 brand new ones, and the one left from back in January was the same as the old one and screwed on properly, but none of the 3 I bought last week would screw on. When I bought them in January I couldn't find them anywhere and the guy at Napa told me they currently weren't making them and that they could not order me any, so I bought some off amazon, which was the only place I could find them. This new round that doesn't fit was new production purchased directly from Napa last week. Has anyone else had this issue recently or know if perhaps they changed the 1042 filter for some reason? It seems very odd and is quite frustrating. Here are pictures of the two filters:

I happened to get my LN oil filter adaptor today as well as a NAPA Gold 1042 filter from Amazon. The filter fits fine on the adaptor. Might try chasing the threads on your filters to see if that helps.
I wouldn't use a filter that needs threads chased. That will just put metal shavings right down the middle, which is supposed to be the 'clean' side of the filter.
LN Engineering lists several filters which are compatible: "Due to filter availability, we may substitute Mann ML1013, Mahle OC999, or Baldwin B31 oil filters for the Napa Gold 1042 / Wix 51042 filter."

The Wix 51042 filters are identical (WIX makes the filters for Napa), and they available locally for me at O'Reilly Auto for $12.
EDIT: Napa, under specifications, lists WIX as the manufacturer:

Interesting, last fall I had the opposite problem, the diameter was too large, the filter simply 'slipped on' over the threads. I took it back to the retailer (Napa), they checked stock and all but one had the overly large diameter. Sorry I didn't take side by side pictures.
Thanks for the input guys. Both filters say made in the U.S. so in this case it isn't a China issue. I didn't save the receipt, since I wasn't expecting to have an issue with something as basic as an oil filter, so hopefully they will take them back. I will check some Wix filters when I am at the store and see if those look like they will fit properly.
DDZ it is interesting that you had the opposite issue with these filters. I swear quality control on a lot of things has just gone down the drain in the last few years.

Thanks for sharing the pictures SoCal. I just got back from the store and the Wix 51042s looked just like the new filters, but the 51042 XPs looked like the old filters that fit.

I don't think there is anyone local to me on this board, but I wasn't able to return the filters without a receipt, so if anyone wants to give one a try they are welcome to.
@Charles Navarro
do you have any experience with the WIX 51042 made in Poland?
Note the holes are different to that of the US filters.
Explanation from Wix Europe when asked what the differences are between the Polish filter and the US filter.

There are differences in technology and appearance as we do it on two different setups.
Also filter media can be different.
But they cover the same OE number.
