I replaced the reflectors with the retrofit labs face lift kit, I got new bulbs, and while I was in there, I did my best to tape up all of the wiring that had cracked and flaking insulation.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2003 Carrera and my passenger headlight has been inconsistently blinking out. I have the factory HID system. Initially I thought it was the bulb, but a few days later it came back on. While it was on, it was steady, it wasn't flickering and was steady, which lead me to believe that the ballast was good. I replaced the reflectors with the retrofit labs face lift kit, I got new bulbs, and while I was in there, I did my best to tape up all of the wiring that had cracked and flaking insulation. I would have rather replace all the wiring with new wires, but I felt like I got most of the wires taped up successfully. My driver's side headlight is working like a champ, but the passenger side is still finicky. Sometimes I'll turn the lights on and they passenger side won't come on at all, but if I turn the lights off and back on, it will come on and might work fine, or it might come on for a minute and then it will flicker and cut out. The main thing is that there seems to be no real consistency in the working/failure. Some time it will come on and seem to work fine, other times it does all the stuff listed above. Does this sound like the ballast is going bad? This would be my first hope as it would be the easiest fix. If it's the ballast, is there a particular ballast or brand that is recommended for the replacement? Is it possible that the connection where the unit plugs in is bad? If it's that, is there a way to help improve that connection? Are there any other ideas/solutions?

POST 2Original post

Swap the ballasts and see if the problem follows.

POST 3Original post

Pull the headlight assembly out, clean all connectors and the socket it plugs into with electrical cleaner. Reseat the headlamp assembly. See if things change. If not, check with Adrian here https://www.adriantaillights.com/sto...986-c114018836

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the suggestions. I swapped the ballasts, and at least for the duration of my drive to work, everything appears to be working as it should. I guess that eliminates the ballast as the issue. I don't believe it's a short in the wiring, because I don't have any blown fuses. I my uneducated mind that leaves a bad connection between the headlight module and the plug... It occurred to me after the fact that inboard rear pin that goes around the washer tube broke off, so this is probably preventing it from remaining as secure as it needs to be. If I can sort that out, hopefully that will be the end of the issue. Thanks again for the suggestions.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, to follow up again, I turned the lights on on my way home, and low and behold, the driver's light blinked out after a few minutes, so I'm pretty sure it is the ballast after all. Is there a particular brand/model that is recommended?

I'm in the same boat as your good self. What brant of ballast did you end up installing?

I went with an OEM replacement. These guys seemed to have the best price once you factor in shipping. I was pleased with their service and it was a simple unplug and swap with no extra jacking around. https://www.headlightexperts.com/hea...cement-ballast

POST 8Original post

Also check all the pins on the connector on the back of the light. Ive seen quite a few that have bent pins due to being reinstalled incorrectly.

POST 10Original post

Well I found out why my left headlight wasn't working / intermittent. Clearly see there's been some sort of melting going on between the ballast and the globe. At the same time I've found the wires to be in terrible shape. What are my options here?

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 19884395

In order to properly fix the wiring you have to remove the lens and completely refurbish the harness. Its something I offer, in combination with a Retrofit projector upgrade if desired.

Hmm... I'm in Australia.... How does that playout? do I send my HL to you for work to then return?

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 19884471

Yikesthats a complication for sure. I recently had a customer from the UK and due to the high shipping cost he decided to send me just his harnesses for repair. But he broke the retention tabs on the main connector so thatll be an interesting job Not sure how much shipping from down under would be.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The best thing to do would be removing the harness and replacing all the wires. I did the lense retrofit, which was a great upgrade, but I had the same problem with the wire coating having disintegrated and for the life of me, I'm couldn't get the harness out. I opted for a more Bubba option and just covered all of the crumbling wires with electric tape so they are all at least insulated. A few months and 1000 miles and it seems to be working.
