No matter what thermostat you put in you will not be able to keep the temps at 160F with the stock cooling system if you are running slower speeds at higher revs and more throttle/power ........

Marine engines run at full throttle all day long at 160F, it is not a problem and is still hot enough to burn off moisture condensation...The hotter running temps of road cars is for fuel mileage and emissions ONLY, don't let anyone tell you differently..

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Team 996, I've got a 2004 996.2 manual C2. Recently installed new water pump (Porsche part) and aftermarket thermostat housing with a 71 degree thermostat from This past weekend I drove 600km (370mi) in varying ambient temperatures ranging from 24C to 36C (78F to 96F) Most of this was freeway sixth gear at around 3000rpm / 100-110kph (62-70mph). The A/C was on auto 22.5 the whole trip. I noted the following behaviours. The notes below are taken after 90 minutes of driving. so everything should have been warm, Water temp barely crossed 80 line (180 for US cars) When off throttle down an extended hill the gauge was below 80. Probably 75? Whilst all of this was occurring oil pressure was 4 bar at 3000rpm (which too me would indicate the engine oil was cool) and not 3 bar During the trip there was some short canyon caving style roads the water temp did increase to over 80 (the needle was vertical) and the oil pressure would be were I'd expect it to be for a hot engine. What I did see was the oil pressure pinned to 5 bar for the first few minutes before it seemed to come back as the engine was worked and everything got hot. So I wonder if this is all ok and carry on or get a replacement thermostat?

POST 3Original post

Not too cold. You have a good cooling system. Don't do anything. Mine is at 180 at highway speeds. It can get hot in stop-n-go but I never see it outside of the '0' in the 180 marker. Maybe 185?

POST 4Original post

You put in a 71C (160F) thermostat. The coolant temps you are getting are correct for the thermostat you have. It seems fine to me.

POST 5Original post

Normal. But if you want the temps to rise, all you gotta do is take it down a gear and get the revs up. The M96 likes to be pushed with higher rpms.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

@Porschetech3 This was the temp after 2 hours of freeway driving. Just after this photo I had a little play what I noticed was the oil pressure was 5 bar at 3500/4000 rpm rather than the 3-4 bar prior. In my mind I would think that the engine isn't warm enough for the load? Thank you for your thoughts on this.

POST 8Original post

It looks like your temp gauge is dead on 80C which is 176F ...plenty hot .....I consider anything below 160F as not fully warmed up...I would LOVE for all my engines to remain at 160F at all times .... but is just not practical , have to warm them up from cold...., then would require a very large cooling system to keep from going over 160F in Bama Summers during hard driving...
