Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

Once it was up 3 or 4 inches it worked fine.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi folks, I am planning to drop the engine and transmission (manual) out of my 986 turbo. Does anyone know the weight of the combined unit? I know its heavy enough that I dont want to drop it on my toes 😀 but dont know if my hydraulic platform is up to the task. Many thanks.

POST 2Original post

All kinds of youtube's of guys using the basic harbor freight hydraulic unit. I think it's 500# rated.

many thanks - that confirms an upgrade is needed!

POST 4Original post

I was able to drop & put my engine back in with the Harbor Freight 500lb table with one caveat - when the table is at the bottom of its throw, it wouldn't lift the motor (mine wouldnt anyway) I had to put a regular floor jack on each side and help it up a few inches. Once it was up 3 or 4 inches it worked fine. It seemed to me that it was a design flaw - one thats perhaps been fixed by now (I think I did my engine work in 2017) in any case good luck

POST 5Original post

I have the 1,000 pound harbor freight lifting table. It can pick up my 996 engine/transmission without any trouble. It could not pick up my Cayenne's V8/transmission/transfer case from the bottom. Like mentioned I used a floor jack to help it the first few inches.

POST 6Original post

I just looked. The HF 500# table costs $250. The 1000# HF table costs $320. People. WTF. It's your a** on the line when you lift stuff that weighs multiples of your own weight. You're working on a PORSCHE so don't cry poormouth. Spend the money.

POST 7Original post

I can't find that table anywhere. But I can tell you that the 500 lbs version has issues with quality. The larger one does too... just not so much. As an alternative, I used an ATV lift and a transmission lift from HF in my garage. Check out my channel for more. Yogi’s Garage

POST 8Original post

I think I have heard the 500 lb table lift is lower and that may help with removing the engine.

This definitely works, I was there!

can confirm. HF 500lb is about an inch lower than 1000lb. I bought the 500lb table in Nov 2023 and it worked terrific to drop the engine/transmission as a unit. Zero issues lifting from fully lowered, it has hard stops so can be left at height. I probably jacked it up and down 15 times working on the engine. Would have had clearance issues w the 1000lb.
